Sylvia Woods (d. 2012) opened the iconic Sylvia’s Restaurant in 1962. Located in the heart of Black Harlem, Sylvia’s has been integral to defining the Black culinary tradition known as soul food—food so flavorful, it nourishes the soul. For over six decades, the restaurant has hosted a diverse range of patrons, including local residents, U.S. presidents, prominent Black celebrities, and activists dedicated to securing human and civil rights for Black communities. As a result, Sylvia’s has become a symbol of Black culture, civic engagement, and economic empowerment. Rising Tide Capital recognizes the importance of spaces like Sylvia’s in shaping vibrant neighborhoods, driving economic growth, creating jobs, and feeding families. For the past 20 years, Rising Tide has empowered food entrepreneurs like Sylvia Woods by helping them establish sustainable businesses across New Jersey and the United States through our network of partners.
