Resilience vocabulary lesson and trivia time! Borehole Extensometer: an instrument that measures certain kinds of land motion. Extensometers extend hundreds to thousands of feet below the ground and measure changes in the thickness of the geologic layers they pass through. Coastal Virginia is experiencing the highest rates of relative sea level rise of anywhere on the East Coast. To help track and understand this challenge, scientists have installed a state-of-the-art extensometer in West Point, Virginia along the York River. The project is a collaboration between: Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD), Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Hampton Roads Planning District Commission and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Chesapeake Bay Studies. With one of our own, Cera Schrems on our team, we have been working with her to start conversations on ways #InnSure could help #WesternNorthCarolina in their rebuilding efforts after being devastated by Hurricane Helene. We are looking forward to our upcoming participation in the Neighborhood Economics Conference on April 1st and 2nd, where we’ll be convening a panel discussion titled “Insuring Your Neighbor: Narrows, VA on the Journey to Insurability.” ?? Like Swannanoa, the town of Narrows, VA, faced severe #flooding when #Helene hit the region, causing one of their three rivers to rise to levels not seen since the 1940s. Despite their resilience, they remain highly susceptible to riverine flooding. Narrows is working with InnSure to understand their Total Cost of Risk and explore creative ways to fund a major resilience project focused on their Water Treatment Facility, which was severely compromised and remains at risk today. On our panel, we will explore:? ?? How RISE Resilience Innovations—an entrepreneurial incubator helping resilience solutions develop and grow—has helped fund over 40+ startups, including InnSure, which is working directly with Narrows.? ?? InnSure will share how their program is helping Narrows and communities nationwide rethink insurance and regain control of their insurability future. ?? This conversation will provide valuable insights into how innovative insurance solutions are empowering communities to build resilience against climate risks and safeguard critical infrastructure. If you’re located near Western North Carolina, we hope you’ll join us for this insightful discussion and learn how Narrows and other communities are paving the way toward a more resilient future! ?? https://lnkd.in/e8FDJePi Charlie Sidoti Stephen Brandt Paul Robinson Terry Nicholson #NeighborhoodEconomics #ClimateResilience #InsuranceInnovation #CommunityResilience #RISEResilience #WaterTreatment #FloodResilience #TotalCostOfRisk #NeighborhoodEconomicsConference #Insurability #Innovation

RISE Challenge Winner, Mērak Labs is currently piloting their solution in Buchanan County, VA, where a rain storm caused major flooding a few weeks ago. The graphics below show projected flooding versus actual flooding in specific areas of the county. Resilience planning is not just a concept and these technologies are protecting people and property, allowing those affected to be ready and take action before a flooding event occurs. #VAFloodAwarenessWeek

Buchanan County’s Resilience Planning in Action! These images tell the story: -?On the left: Our flood risk models identified the areas most vulnerable to flooding. - On the right: What happened when floodwaters overtook homes and roads just weeks later. This past week, we were in Buchanan County, VA, seeing firsthand what happens when data meets reality. The good news? They are already taking steps to reduce risk. We’re working with local leaders to: --> Prioritize the most at-risk areas based on real-world flood modeling. --> Find targeted solutions that work within existing resources—because waiting for the “perfect” funding isn’t an option. --> Turn risk data into action so that communities are prepared, not just reacting to disasters. Resilience planning works. Buchanan County VA is proof of that. While we can’t stop every flood, we can identify vulnerabilities, reduce risk, and protect communities before the next disaster hits. Properties in the same flood zone can face very different risks based on structural elevation. What if you could see how floodwaters would impact YOUR home? RISE winner True Flood Risk developed an AI-powered tool that visualizes flood depths based on a property’s First Floor Height (FFH). This innovation helps communities make smarter, real-time decisions on flood risk and resilience. At RISE, we support visionary entrepreneurs in building a more resilient future for coastal and inland communities. Learn more about True Flood Risk: https://lnkd.in/eDnGDBpk
Bringing Flood Risk to Life with Augmented Reality You may have heard that FEMA estimates just one inch of water in a home can cause more than $25,000 in damages. But what if you could actually see how floodwaters would impact your property—not just through a general flood map, but with an interactive, location-specific visualization? That’s exactly what our Augmented Reality Flood Visualization feature does on the True Flood Risk platform. Most flood risk assessments rely on general flood maps and ground elevation data, but without property-specific First Floor Height (FFH), the true risk remains unclear. Two properties in the same flood zone can have drastically different risk profiles depending on their structural elevation. Using our proprietary AI-driven FFH estimator, we precisely overlay floodwater depths onto individual properties, illustrating the real impact of rising water—whether a few inches or several feet. More importantly, when communities invest in mitigation or adaptation projects that lower the expected Base Flood Elevation (BFE), our tool visually demonstrates the reduced risk in real time. Originally launched as part of our 2021 RISE Resilience Innovations Challenge solution in Norfolk, VA, this feature is the first of its kind to scale across properties and communities worldwide. By providing a clear, property-specific visualization of flood risk, we help property owners, insurers, and local governments make informed decisions about protection and resilience. Curious how this could support your community or business? Let’s connect! #FloodRisk #AugmentedReality #ClimateResilience #TrueFloodRisk #Mitigation #PropTech #Flood
