Meet our three amazing assistant teachers! Marina Monzon has dedicated the last seven years or their professional career to developing a considerable skill set that supports and understands the developmental needs of children under three years old. They have received formal Montessori training through an established and highly accredited international organization and continue to acquire knowledge through methodologies and pedagogies that are progressive, holistic, and culturally responsive. Marina believes that working with young children requires a necessary retrospect of their own life experiences, and it is their responsibility to consistently reflect inward about these experiences and how they manifest in learning environments. They refer to their teaching style as a collaboration with children, as they believe that every child has an innate desire to seek knowledge about the world and be a collaborator in it. Marina fills their spare time with community activities such as virtual book clubs, baking nights, group camping, nature hikes, community gardening, picnicking, and mutual aid work. They have a deep appreciation and love for nature and all the other life forces that share space on Earth. Thea Chase has been working in Early Childhood Education for over 20 years. She has enjoyed working in multiple roles throughout her career including lead, assistant, and inclusion aide. She has a passion for teaching young children through hands on experience, movement, and play. Thea has experience working with children as young as 6 weeks up to elementary school age, with a special fondness for the preschool years. She has taught in Connecticut, California, and now here in Texas. She has been in San Antonio for 5 years and absolutely loves the community here. On the weekends Thea enjoys exploring local parks, cooking, and spending time with her family. Kathleen (Katie) Barragan comes to Rise with nearly 25 years of experience in early childhood education. She has spent time working with children as young as six weeks to six years of age and has recently spent time volunteering with elementary aged students. The highest concentration of her time in the classroom has been with toddlers, twos and threes. In 2009, Katie earned her Associate of the Arts degree from Wilbur Wright College in Chicago, with coursework in Child Development and Elementary Education. Currently, Katie is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Educational Studies, from Grand Canyon University. She is passionate about working with young children and loves helping them discover their strengths and abilities and to find joy in learning and in life. Katie is a mother of four and loves spending quality time with her family. Together they enjoy baking, gardening, making playdough and other slimy concoctions, and spending time swimming or exploring the great outdoors. Join us in welcoming these three special educators to the Rise Team!

Our team of experienced, dedicated professionals is the heart of Rise- each of us drawn to the inclusive, integrated learning environment that Rise will provide all students. Our director Leslie Gonzalez received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2008 and her master’s in occupational therapy in 2010 from Texas Woman’s University. As an OT, Leslie has worked in both adult rehab and pediatric settings. She spent nearly eight years working as a pediatric occupational therapist with Christus Children’s. One of her favorite parts of being an occupational therapist was being a clinical educator and empowering future OTs to help children. In 2021 she chose to further her education by pursuing a master’s in business administration, which she completed in December of 2022. Throughout her tenure as a clinician, Leslie has demonstrated a passion for continuous learning. She considers education to be a lifelong process, and she is eager to apply her knowledge and skills to the School Director position with The Rise School. In her free time Leslie enjoys going on adventures with her husband and five-year-old son, watching college football, playing poker, gardening, and reading. She has also written a book, “X Finds His Spot”, that focuses on a young boy’s struggle with not always coming in first place.

They enrolled the twins at the Rise School and discovered that the integrated model serves all children—those with developmental differences as well as typically-developing children. The Rise School of San Antonio is a 501c3 that will provide the highest quality of early educational services to children ages six months to six years. That’s how they are going to thrive.” When the O’Briens were living in Corpus Christi they wanted a different environment for their daughter Amelia— a space where she could be independent.
