?? Globally, more than 500 million young women and girls struggle to manage their menstrual health on a daily basis. Of these, data from 2024 estimates that 37 million are in #Nigeria! These are alarming figures, and as such, call for strong collaborations on holistic initiatives ?? With our dream of transforming the world little by little, Be Girl is joining forces with Grassroot Soccer Nigeria, an adolescent health organization, and its implementing partner YEDI, to implement a modest, yet innovative pilot, with an enormous mission ??: ?? Gather data on adolescent’s knowledge and attitudes towards menstruation; and, for girls in particular, on their experiences with menstrual health, hygiene and management (MHHM). ?? The baseline and endline of this first pilot has been implemented in Makoko community in Lagos, one of the largest slums in West Africa, from September 2024 to February 2025, as part of Be Girl's commitment to provide technical support to the Technical Working Group on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (TWG-MHHM) led by the Federal Ministry of Women affairs. ?? We can't wait to share the results of this pilot in a comprehensive learning study, which will serve to inform all interested actors in eradicating the frightening figures of menstrual poverty in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa ??. Last week, Food4Education celebrated a critical milestone- feeding 500,000 children every day!! It was a week of celebration across all our locations starting on Monday when all our office staff went to work in the kitchens preparing a special surprise meal for the kids that included 13 tonnes of nyama ??. A special treat, our most requested menu item and one we almost never provide ??. The kids were so happy and it was so great seeing updates coming in from all our 4300 staff about how the day was meaningful for them! During the week, we hosted various trivia and internal ‘lunch and learn’ sessions to share about the early days of F4E and the highlights - and challenges - of the insane growth trajectory we’ve been on. On Friday, which was also the Africa Day of School Feeding, we opened up our kitchens and hosted staff and their kids. While our kitchens are often visited by partners and friends of the organization, they operate when kids are in schools so when our staff (who are 70% parents) come to work, their kids are off to class. I wanted the parents to show their kids where they work and how much they are badasses - cooking tens of thousands of meals per kitchen (mum and dad points!). We then hosted celebrations that included bouncing castles, face painting, dancing and of course, a special lunch for all staff and their kids - across all our locations. Some of the people who attended included our first cooks who still work with us, kids who were once fed in primary schools and now work with us, teachers, parents who are staff, government and community leaders.? It was a surreal week, full of so much joy and celebration. We celebrated a dream that started with just 25 kids, 13 years ago in 10 Kenyan counties. We heard stories of impact that are beyond what I could imagine and feeling the excitement about what is to come.
