Great to lead a virtual training on health disinformation with the European Digital Media Observatory! This session built on Ripple Research’s work at the intersection of #publichealth and #climatechange. Disinformation doesn’t respect boundaries. It jumps from health discussions to political debates to cultural trends. Yet, our responses remain siloed. One group tackles health misinformation, another focuses on politics, but they’re not always coordinating. That’s a problem. At Ripple Research, we work to bridge these gaps. Through innovative research and cross-disciplinary approaches, we’re developing better ways to tackle misinformation that requires breaking down these silos. Let’s push for a more connected approach. If you're working on misinformation, let’s talk. Because solving this challenge takes all of us. Big thanks to my co-trainers, Sara Beatriz Monteiro (Polígrafo, Viral Check) and Keith Peter Kiely (BRODhub, GATE Institute), for their invaluable insights! #misinformation #health

Ripple Research’s analysis found a massive information void in the wake of USAID’s ongoing shutdown. Google searches in the US for “What is USAID?” and “What does USAID do?” have surged, showing that many people are searching for answers. However, with the official website scrubbed, the primary source of verified information has seemingly vanished, creating a critical gap. ? This void is already being filled by misinformation, reshaping perceptions of one of the most significant aid agencies in the world. As unverified claims spread unchecked, USAID’s role, impact, and legacy are at risk of being rewritten.? ? Read our full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/dpGWMP6m

January 2025 saw a sharp surge in positive discussions about China on X/Twitter. The surge centred around three topics: RedNote—with Americans sharing stories of wholesome cultural exchanges as they moved to the platform around the TikTok ban, DeepSeek AI—drawing praise for outperforming billion-dollar Silicon Valley AI models at a fraction of the cost, and China's technological breakthroughs that had people amazed at everything from kilometre-wide solar stations to rapid infrastructure advances. People don’t expect to encounter #misinformation on LinkedIn. The visible job titles, work histories, and professional affiliations prime users to perceive LinkedIn as a credible space. Last week, we collaborated with Heinrich-B?ll-Stiftung European Union, Brussels to publish key insights from our research on #climatemisinformation across Linkedin that reveals a sobering reality – even the most trusted #digitalplatforms like Linkedin cannot be entirely misinfo-proofed.?? Why? ? Instead of outright #climatedenialism, misinformation narratives often use sophisticated tactics to frame #climatesolutions as ineffective, expensive, or impractical. ? Platform level protections against misinformation, while necessary, struggle to keep up with the ever-evolving ways misinformation mutates and spreads online. What next? ?? Building human capacity for evaluating information critically, regardless of where we encounter it, is absolutely vital. With Texas A&M University, Ripple Research explored one way to cultivate this capacity through hands-on #medialiteracy training. Head over to Heinrich B?ll Stiftung’s blog to learn more about our study on this critical issue.??

Is #climatemisinformation present on LinkedIn, and if so, what forms does it take? Heinrich-B?ll-Stiftung European Union, Brussels invited us to contribute to their blog and present findings from our study on the prevalence of #misinformation narratives undermining #climatesolutions on LinkedIn. In collaboration with Prof. Gunnar Schade from Texas A&M University, we uncovered the sophisticated tactics used by #misinfuencers on LinkedIn, individuals with large followings and professional credentials, to spread misleading narratives about #climatechange. These narratives frame climate concerns as exaggerated or alarmist, creating doubt about the urgency and legitimacy of climate action. Ira Pragnya Senapati, policy and research lead at Ripple Research, shares more insights from our study on LinkedIn’s climate misinformation landscape. Read the full post below.

How does #misinformation undermine climate action? ???? We have been actively working to understand the contours of climate polarization and its impact on public opinion and policy reforms. Our research reveals that: 1?? Misinformation frames climate policies as an example of the conspiratorial #greenagenda, overwhelming the conversation around #farmerprotests and making it difficult for governments and farmers to find #commonground. 2?? Misinformation weaponizes gendered terms like #soyboys to turn the issue of sustainable diets into a culture war by suggesting that #plantbased diets conflict with traditional masculine ideals. 3?? Misinformation routinely disrupts #policymaking processes, invoking fears of government overreach and portraying #climateaction as an attack on personal freedoms. Pragnya Senapati, our Policy and Research Lead, discusses these findings in more detail on the Cities 1.5 podcast hosted by David Miller, Managing Director of the C40 Cities Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy. Here’s a quick recap of the conversation.?? https://lnkd.in/g-WdAPeB
