We asked three of our Built Environment Solutions experts: how does restoration of historic or landmark buildings differ from restoration of a newer building? Daniel Isackson, AIA, RRC, LEED AP BD+C, CXLT, Technical Director, Architectural Engineering: “The main difference with historic preservation work compared to work on a newer building is that what you put back needs to follow strict compliance rules from the local, state, and/or national regulatory agencies. Many of the rules require that we select appropriate materials when repairing the building, retain existing building materials to the greatest extent possible, and maintain the historic integrity of the building. This requires research and careful documentation of any items being replaced, like windows and trim work. If elements are missing, and we want to put them back, our decisions may need to be based on historical photographs or renderings. Although this sounds like we are constrained, historic preservation work can be quite rewarding, knowing you are part of restoring a historic artifact, in this case, a building. With a newer building, depending on the damage, we may decide to clad over the building with a new material and completely change the look.” Mike Lopez, R.A., AIA, Technical Director, Architectural Engineering: “Outside of the historic regulatory agencies from which we would need to seek approval, the mindset in working on a historic building is that we cannot ask ourselves if we can wholesale remove this or that element from the building or redesign it; rather, we need to ask how we can restore and maintain the essence of the building as we work.” Mike Mahmoud Bahjat, ing., M. ing., District Manager: “Restoring a historic or landmark building involves preserving its historic integrity and cultural significance. These buildings are often protected by heritage conservation laws and must maintain their original architectural features, materials, and craftsmanship. In contrast, restoration work on newer buildings focuses more on functionality, performance, and aesthetics, without the constraints of historic limitation.” Our #BuildingExperts offer a comprehensive suite of services to assist clients with their projects.
