We asked three of our Built Environment Solutions experts: what advice would you give to a young #architect or #engineer starting out in building envelope restoration? Daniel Isackson, AIA, RRC, LEED AP BD+C, CXLT, Technical Director, Architectural Engineering: “Some of the main reasons we get restoration work are due to deferred maintenance or damage that was related to improper design and/or construction. Other reasons for restoration work being needed are storm- or fire-related damage. My main advice to young professionals is to question everything and take the time to learn why the building was damaged in the first place. In many ways, building envelope restoration is reverse engineering; rather than designing a building from scratch, you get to learn how it was put together and then the best way to restore it to prevent the damage from reoccurring.” Mike Lopez, R.A., AIA, Technical Director, Architectural Engineering: “Be a sponge, and be curious. Never stop asking questions of your peers, your colleagues, and other industry professionals. Also, establish a group of trusted friends and colleagues, even if they are considered to be your competition. There is a scene in Ted Lasso where he’s competing in darts and his whole monologue speaks to this, and I highly recommend it.” Mike Mahmoud Bahjat, ing., M. ing., District Manager: “Seek mentorship from experienced professionals who can provide guidance and insights based on their years of experience. Learn from their successes and challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
