When I asked a group of elementary students, “What is a nonprofit?” most confidently answered, “A company that doesn’t make any money.” Surprisingly, that’s the same (wrong) response many adults give. Here’s the truth: Nonprofits are better described as "For-Purpose" organizations that require funds and support to fulfill their missions. "Nonprofit" is a tax status, not a (viable) business model. Fun Facts About Nonprofits in Kansas City: ?? 12,569 registered nonprofits in the metro area ?? 1 in 9 Kansas Citians work for a nonprofit ?? Nonprofits generate $18.5 billion in annual revenue—so much for not making money! (Source: Nonprofit Connect Impact Report) As I spoke to students in the Hickman Mills School District through #PrepKC (prepkc.org), I saw firsthand their curiosity and excitement about the impact nonprofits have on our communities. This expanded space represents so much more than a physical transformation. ?It’s a new chapter in our mission to create opportunities for individuals and businesses alike.
