Recycling is good, but prevention is better - and the responsibility shouldn't fall on individuals only. The best way to tackle our waste crisis is to reduce resource use and design products to last: durable, reusable, and repairable. The benefits go beyond the environment: curbing overproduction and reducing waste means material and energy savings, more circular innovation, and new quality local jobs in the reuse and repair sectors. This #RecyclingDay, let’s push for real solutions that create a truly circular economy. Who’s with us? #circulareconomy #recycling #waste

We’ve reached episode 100 of the Restart Podcast! We launched this show a decade ago and we’re so proud of what we’ve managed to produce and all of the conversations that we’ve had over the years. ? ? To mark the occasion, we wanted to speak to a few notable repair pioneers that mostly - somehow - haven't been on the podcast until now! But right now is actually a perfect time to reflect together and think about what comes next for the repair movement. ? ? Ugo got back behind the mic to connect with contemporaries and old friends: Martine Postma, Kyle Wiens, Cristina Ganapini, and Mathew Lubari.? ? Why we need broad #ecodesign repairability requirements to make the devices we rely on every day last longer ???? ?? In 2022 alone, the world generated the equivalent to 63 times the weight of the Golden Gate bridge of electronic waste. ???? 2/3 of this waste comes from small electronics packed with critical raw materials—often sourced at a high human & environmental cost. Yet, their longevity & repairability are still unregulated. Time for change! #RightToRepair ??? Longer-lasting, repairable products mean lower costs and less downtime for consumers & businesses, as well as more proximity jobs in #repair & #refurbishment in Europe. It’s a win-win ?? ?? I was honored to advocate for horizontal repairability requirements at the first #Ecodesign Forum on behalf of Right to Repair Europe and The Restart Project. Let's do this! ?? Check out our input on how to make this happen: https://lnkd.in/dqGwKXMC HOP - Halte à l'obsolescence programmée European Environmental Bureau ECOS Katrin Meyer Back Market Claire Darmon Eva Maria Bille Thomas Opsomer iFixit Europe RREUSE - Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises
If done right, Ecodesign makes EU businesses more competitive. We have asked industry, NGOs and academia how Ecodesign, as part of the #CleanIndustrialDeal, can boost the EU economy. They agree that it can: ?? Increase innovation and boost demand for sustainable products ??? Make every-day products more repairable and longer lasting ?? Help the primary industry to decarbonise ?? Create proximity jobs in Europe By embracing a #CircularEconomy under the Clean Industrial Deal, industries can enhance economic security by making better use of limited resources in a more sustainable way. ?? Our coalition members are officially part of the Ecodesign Forum! The European Commission selected experts from private, public and non-governmental sectors to discuss and develop important legislation for products to be covered under ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation). Five members of Right to Repair Europe were selected and recently participated in the first Ecodesign Forum meeting in February 2025. ?? Read our written feedback here: https://lnkd.in/dN5bwmgf ??? Going forward, our members will bring the R2R coalition's demands to policy discussions through the Ecodesign Forum, ensuring all the different voices within our coalition are heard: - ECOS, representing civil society and the environment from policy and standardisation in the EU and beyond - European Environmental Bureau, gathering a wide network of environmental organisations active in EU environmental policy - HOP - Halte à l'obsolescence programmée, bringing experiences from national policy advocacy and campaigning to the EU level - The Restart Project, bringing the European community repair perspective and enthusiasm to policymaking - RREUSE - Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises, representing social enterprises active in reuse and recycling in the EU ?? Our members Back Market and refurbed will also represent EUREFAS in the Ecodesign Forum, ensuring the refurbishing sector's perspective is heard. Exciting times ahead to advocate for repairability on all the important upcoming product-specific and horizontal (!) legislation to be discussed. ?? As the EU Commission is set to work on ecodesign requirements for a wide range of products, from electronics and appliances to textiles and more, join our coalition to bring your organisation's perspective into the Ecodesign Forum! ?? Having removable and replaceable #batteries is a must if we want our products to last longer. After the adoption of the Batteries Regulation in 2023, the European Commission has now published its guidelines for harmonised application of removability and replaceability requirements under Art.11 of the Regulation. As always, we took a closer look... ?? ?? Criteria to allow for derogations were kept robust - except for a spelling mistake which we trust will be corrected soon. Software blocks like parts-pairing are also prohibited, and compatibility of non-original batteries ensured. ? Bad news, however, for batteries of smartphones and tablets - for these products, Ecodesign requirements will prevail over the Batteries Regulation, allowing for an important exemption from battery removability and replaceability rules! ?? I couldn't agree more ?? ?? The Clean Industrial Deal must extend the lifespan of *products* to cut resource use. Waste prevention must come before recycling and there is still SO MUCH to do to boost reuse and repair of products. Policy gaps & needs that must be addressed by the new Circular Economy Act ?? https://lnkd.in/g54z5Ppg
?? The Clean Industrial Deal (CID) is coming – but will it truly drive a circular economy? On February 26, 2025, the CID will be unveiled with the ambition of making the EU a global leader in circularity by 2030. But here’s the challenge: while it focuses on industrial transformation, it lacks a fully holistic approach to circularity. To bridge the gap, we must go beyond efficiency and embed circularity at every level. Here’s what needs to happen: ? Set material reduction targets – Cutting resource use is step one. The CID must introduce binding targets across packaging, construction, and textiles to decouple economic growth from resource depletion. ?? Prioritise waste prevention over recycling – We need strong eco-design regulations, waste reduction targets, and bans on unnecessary single-use items. Prevention must come before recycling. ?? Mandate reuse & repair – Voluntary action isn’t enough. Binding reuse quotas, right-to-repair legislation, and tax incentives for repair and second-hand markets are essential. ?? Address consumption & demand-side policies – Industrial policy alone won’t cut it. The CID must push for EPR reforms, bans on planned obsolescence, and consumption-based targets to drive real systemic change. ?? Phase out waste incineration & landfills – We cannot rely on polluting disposal methods. The CID must commit to: ?? 0% untreated municipal waste to landfill by 2030 ?? Mandatory sorting of mixed waste before incineration ?? Ending subsidies for incineration & redirecting investments into waste prevention ?? The CID can be a game-changer—but only if it tackles the full lifecycle of materials, from design to disposal. What’s missing to make the CID truly circular? Let’s discuss! ??

When it comes to #electronics, there's one EU policy solution that could make them ALL more sustainable ???? horizontal ecodesign measures! Moving slowly from product to product isn't efficient when there's a faster and more effective approach that could: ?? Reduce the environmental impacts of electronics ?? Prevent e-waste from piling up ???? Create repair jobs across the EU All electronic products must be designed to be: ??? Easy to disassemble and repair with affordable and accessible spare parts ?? Supported by free access to repair information ?? Free from software restrictions that prevent spare part replacements Alongside 30+ civil society and repair organisations, we've called on the European Commission to introduce horizontal ecodesign requirements for electronic products.
