Chad's president, Mahamet Deby Itno, obviously wasn't too happy with the way the meeting went with the French. The Russians, previously using Wagner Group and now The Africa Corps (TAC) PMC, have been trying to finagle their way into Chad as a main ally, to help cover the expanse of the Sahel belt with Russian client states. Meanwhile, according to a 2023 Wall Street Journal report, the US had provided intelligence to the Chadian government, indicating that Wagner has been working with Chadian rebels (e.g. The?Front for Change and Concord in Chad [FACT], Union of Resistance Forces [UFR]). US intel also pointed to plots to assassinate the president. (This might explain Chad's reluctance to completely burn the bridge with the US and align with the Russians.) Chad announced on Thursday that it is terminating its defence cooperation agreement with France, a move its government claims is aimed at reasserting its sovereignty and recalibrating its international relations away from its former colonial ruler.? The decision, which Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abderaman Koulamallah described as a historic turning point, comes more than 60 years after the Central African nation gained independence.? The statement highlighted Chad’s intention to reshape its alliances in line with national priorities, though it stressed that the move would not undermine historical ties with France, with both nations committed to maintaining relations in areas of mutual interest. https://lnkd.in/dumAeypS ------------- *Also, see this (speculative) report X posting about what happened at the meeting: https://lnkd.in/d-W4FziE ------------ #chad #france #talks #frenchmilitary #aid #militaryassistance #war #rebels #insurgents #terrorism #terrorists #sahel #islamists #tribalism #usa #usmilitarybases #security #defence #strategy #counterterrorism #geopolitics #russia #africa #geopolitics #foreignrelations
