After wildfire, rain doesn’t just wash over the land, but moves everything downstream. After the Line Fire and February’s storm, Sierra Wallace and Jeremy Burns headed out to the upper Santa Ana River to set up monitoring sites and collect samples. Sierra, water resources Project Scientist, and Jeremy, Assistant Director of watershed science and planning, tracked runoff carrying ash, soil, and debris from the burn areas. Every sample helps us understand how fire impacts water quality, long after the flames are gone and the storm passes. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a talk by my RICK colleague Jeremy Burns at the National Monitoring Conference. The dialogue with colleagues from around the country on BMP monitoring challenges and the effectiveness of GI projects was truly enlightening. Occasionally work hits the mark on both scientific intrigue and good old-fashioned fun! RICK had the opportunity to work with San Bernardino Valley (https://www.sbvmwd.com) to evaluate water quality impacts from the Line Fire during recent storm events. We were able to successfully install remote monitoring locations, including upstream of an impoundment, which provided valuable data and insights on stormwater runoff directly discharging from the wildfire burn areas. Sierra Wallace and I had the privilege of working in the beautiful upper Santa Ana River, including during the large storm event in mid-February that brought over 5 inches of rain to the watershed. This storm generated substantial runoff with minimal antecedent seasonal rainfall, providing uniquely representative samples of post-fire water quality. This major event also damaged the access roads, but no problem…with RICK’s side-by-side off-road vehicle, we were able to get to the site and retrieve all equipment. The right tools and a little adventure delivers successful outcomes!?
