Traditional advice given to founders as they scale is “hire good people and give them room to do their jobs”. That is disastrous advice. Everyone is talking about it and it’s true: every leader and founder needs to operate in Founder-mode. Brian Chesky recently spoke of this and it’s great nomenclature on how businesses should be run. For years, founders and leaders have been told to hire great people and leave them to run the business. A ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ mentality. The reality is, that doesn’t work. Every single founder and leader NEEDS to be in the details. Founders and leaders have unique insights, an understanding of the business, and an outsized level of care toward the business. They are the superpower of a business; pulling up too high out of weeds removes that superpower. I think this expands beyond just founders but applies to all leaders. Leaders can act in Founder-mode. If you’re a leader or a founder, stay in the details. Have high trust with who you hire, but don’t work at such a high level you leave it to everyone else to run all the details of the business.

What can you do in 26 weeks? These 3 dudes have taken a brand new podcast from 0 to 50K average views per episode. Last week they had the Shopify President - Harley Finkelstein as a guest on the podcast. They got here in just 26 episodes! Hats off to Connor, Connor MacDonald and Cody for creating one of the most loved pods in DTC!
Founders and leaders need to focus on where they can subtract - not add. It’s really easy to add, it’s extremely hard to subtract. When you say ‘yes’ to a new project or goal - you’re effectively saying ‘no’ to everything else. When you subtract, you get really clear on what you are doing and focus your time. It’s about reducing toil. Be very intentional about what you say yes to. When you do this over a long period of time, you’re able to maximize your output. If it doesn’t help you grow the business, bring you joy, or make the business better: it should be a no. This is something I've learnt from Tobias Lütke. Talked about this principle of subtraction on the latest episode of the Marketing Operators Podcast with Cody Plofker, Connor MacDonald, and Connor Rolain - who are all leaders at Shopify powered brands Jones Road Beauty, Ridge Wallet, and HexClad Cookware. Listen to our full episode below https://lnkd.in/etgUMG58 What’s something you think every founder needs to focus on?
