The Richmond Institute for Veterans Research, formerly known as McGuire Research Institute, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, created to fund research and education at the Richmond VA Medical Center (VAMC). Established by the Veteran Affairs Central Office in 1989, RIVR has been the organization at the forefront of scientific discovery at the Richmond VAMC for 33 years.

  • This American Heart Month, we proudly recognize Dr. Jose F. Huizar, MD, FACC, FHRS, FAHA, for his dedication to improving heart health and advancing cardiovascular research for our veterans. ?? As Professor of Medicine at VCU and Associate Chief of Staff for Research & Development at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System, Dr. Huizar has made significant contributions to understanding and treating cardiac arrhythmias and cardiomyopathy. ?? His groundbreaking research on premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and PVC-induced cardiomyopathy has shaped current treatment approaches, improving patient outcomes nationwide. ?? A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Huizar has trained countless medical residents, cardiology fellows, and future healthcare leaders.
