  • A NEW BEGINNING. On Friday, March 21, Columbia College (SC) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of College Place, a new campus building that was the former home of College Place United Methodist Church, a historic Columbia landmark. The former church has been revamped to serve as the new home for the college’s Division of Education, offering support for students pursuing careers in teaching and leadership and equipped with classrooms, offices and spaces for collaboration. Local leaders and County Councilmembers, including Councilwoman Tyra K. Little (District 3), Councilman Paul Livingston (District 4) and Councilwoman Gretchen D. Barron (District 7), attended the grand opening to help celebrate the new addition to Columbia College. Photo credits: Columbia College. #ColumbiaCollegeSC #RichlandCountySC

Born in Bamberg to Indian immigrants, Nikki Haley graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting from Clemson University in 1994, becoming the chief financial officer for her family’s business after college. Haley has enjoyed an extensive career in public service since winning a state House of Representatives seat in 2004. In 2010 she became South Carolina’s first female and first minority governor. A defining moment of her time as governor came in 2015, when Haley called for the Confederate flag’s removal from the Statehouse grounds after a mass shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church. Later that year, she led recovery efforts after a thousand-year flood ravaged parts of the state. Haley’s commitment to securing the safety and well-being of South Carolinians during the turmoil and intensity of 2015 reflects Richland County’s core value of accountability, as the County works to maintain a high standard of public services for residents. • A FOUNDATION OF FAITH. On Saturday, March 22, Pine Grove AME Church unveiled a historical marker at its home in Little Mountain, SC, celebrating 157 years of working to uplift the surrounding community through worship, outreach and education. County Councilman Jason Branham (District 1) and Charles Weber, vice chair of the County’s Conservation Commission, attended the event and presented a proclamation to Reverend Jannie Collier, pastor of Pine Grove, on behalf of the County. Thank you Pine Grove AME Church for all you have done to nurture the hearts and souls of the people living in and around Little Mountain and across Richland County. #RichlandCountySC
