Unconventional Computing. Rice Computer Science is part of the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing.
关于我们
As part of Rice University's George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing, the Department of Computer Science offers six degrees: Bachelor of Art Bachelor of Science Master of Science Master of Computer Science Master of Data Science Doctor of Philosophy Our courses teach you how to approach problems by thinking about the characteristics of a problem, its parameters, and the ways in which they can be represented; also how data is produced, processed and organized, and how it can be modeled, analyzed, visualized, and manipulated. You will also explore the impact of computing paradigms and use existing and emerging hardware ecosystems to tackle challenging problems. The problem-solving, analytical and programming skills you learn here can be applied to the challenges found in areas such as medicine, energy, economics, and social issues, among many others. Undergraduate students do not need prior coding experience to succeed in our introductory courses, and our professional masters programs are some of the few that do not require an undergraduate degree in computer science.

Rice CS faculty member Rodrigo Ferreira visited YES Prep Public Schools and encouraged the students to challenge stereotypes. Ferreira, a member of Rice’s?Broadening Participation in Computing?(BPC) committee, spoke to the group as part of the school’s?LatinX Leadership Summit, whose 2024 theme was “Mosaic de Cultura - Piecing Together LatinX Heritage.” “My favorite part of the summit was to learn what it means to be Latinx through different types of views,” said one attendee. “We learned that ‘Latin’ is a definition of our own,” said another. https://bit.ly/3CslXnh

Rice CS Assistant Professor Konstantinos Mamouras and his group have published findings on a ‘safer’ way to code. The paper articulates and solves a key problem that can occur when using regular expressions (regex). The team's research won a Distinguished Paper Award at this year's PLDI Conference in Copenhagen. https://bit.ly/3O7fUHy

Recent research from Rice University’s Kavraki Lab has made important advancements in the realm of robotics and motion planning. With the lab's new hardware and algorithmic discoveries, robots can begin to move into a dynamic, unpredictable environment and make decisions faster and more reactively. Researchers include Clayton Ramsey (pictured), Zachary Kingston and Wil Thomason along with their advisor Lydia E. Kavraki. https://bit.ly/48CmXkA

The Ken Kennedy Institute hosted a Technology, Culture, and Society Lecture by Moshe Vardi on "Lessons from Texas, COVID-19, and the 737 Max: #Efficiency vs. #Resilience." Dr. Vardi explored learnings from recent disasters to argue why resilience should be a primary consideration in #ComputerScience, #Algorithms and #Economics. Dr. Vardi is a University Professor and the George Distinguished Service Professor in Computational Engineering at Rice University — Rice Computer Science Department. He is also a Fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. ICYMI: A recording of the lecture is available on our YouTube channel.
