We build community through architecture

关于我们

The Rice School of Architecture is the smallest professional degree program situated within a top research university, allowing individual attention with the breadth of study afforded by a major university. We advance architectural discourse by creating design, conducting research, and curating events that reveal planetary connections. Located in Houston, Rice University is a leading research institution committed to fostering a strong intellectual environment for the next generation of leaders and thinkers. Our small, five-to-one student-to-faculty ratio encourages a close-knit community that provides both undergraduates and graduates with thoughtful instruction, particularly in the studio setting. The school’s position within a top tier university allows us to draw extensively from other disciplines to forge new territories of speculative practice, as demonstrated by our faculty’s leadership role with Rice’s environmental studies interdisciplinary minor; our cross-listed courses with other schools and departments, particularly humanities, business, and engineering; and our collaborations with the other arts groups on campus and in the city.

Images from the culminating thesis degree project “The Edge of Infrastructure” by Yufei Wang (M.Arch. ’24) @yufei_wang11, which fuses strategies for ecological reclamation and public space along the Yangtze River. “This thesis presents an inhabitable infrastructure located on the banks of the Yangtze River in Wuhan, China, and aims to rekindle the historic relationship between the city and its river. Addressing current and future water-related challenges including flooding, drought, and pollution, the project explores and argues for new forms, means, and methods of cohabitation with water. The project proposal is situated between the built and unbuilt (city and river), stable and indeterminant (building and landscape), and macro and micro (infrastructure and human activities). Ultimately, it seeks to create a resilient urban environment that adapts to seasonal changes and encourages public engagement with the river.” Faculty advisor: Professor in the Practice Nathan Friedman @deldistrito

Join us for a thought-provoking lecture by Richard Anderson on El Lissitzky’s visionary architecture, “Internationality is an Asset of Our Epoch,” Monday, November 4, at 12:00 noon in Cannady Hall Faculty Atelier. Anderson, a professor of architectural history and theory at the University of Edinburgh, and author of Wolkenbügel: El Lissitzky as Architect (MIT Press, 2024), will delve into Lissitzky’s journey from painter to architect, focusing on his groundbreaking “horizontal skyscraper” project, the Wolkenbügel. This ambitious design integrated Moscow’s urban flow with slender structures towering above intersections—a testament to the cross-cultural influences that birthed modern architecture. Don't miss this deep dive into Lissitzky’s creative process, revealing how his work bridged media and space, shaping the conditions of internationality in architecture. ??courtesy Richard Anderson
