Today Innovate Newport hosted The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce' fourth Blue Tech Talk, featuring Andrew Gregg, CTO and co-founder at HavocAI. It's #SharkWeek! Tonight, University of Rhode Island #URIGSO Ph.D. student Christine de Silva will appear in her fourth Shark Week episode since 2020, as co-host for this season's "Alien Sharks: Ghosts of Japan." de Silva and co-host Forrest Galante aim to find and tag a Japanese angelshark, an elusive bottom-dwelling species, in Japan's Suruga Bay. The show allowed de Silva to showcase her company, Juice Robotics, which develops underwater cameras and equipment capable of operating at depths of up to 3,000 meters. Our first Blue Tech Talk in the Series of 7, featured Sue Van Hook, Founder of MycoBuoys, a company that creates biocompatible, mushroom-based buoys to support cages, traps and lines used in fish, shellfish and seaweed aquaculture. It was refreshing to learn about this "low technology" that could have a massive impact on our oceans and the world. Sue talked about the importance of circular economy, and how mushrooms could play a role in replacing plastics and Styrofoam. If you are curious about how mushrooms can be used to replace plastics, Styrofoam, and even wood, reach out to Sue. This foundress has wisdom, experience, and determination, and is eager to mentor.
