关于我们

Mission: Rhode Island Humanities seeds, supports, and strengthens public history, cultural heritage, civic education, and community engagement by and for all Rhode Islanders. To learn more about RI Humanities's Vision, Values, and How We Do Our Work, visit: https://rihumanities.org/about/history/ History: RI Humanities was established in 1973 as an independent state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), which was founded in 1965 thanks to the leadership of Rhode Island’s own late Senator Claiborne Pell. A private nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, RI Humanities is supported by federal funds from NEH as well as by individuals, corporations, and foundations. We are one of 56 humanities councils found in every state and U.S. territory. As the only dedicated source of funding for public humanities in Rhode Island, we are proud to support museums, libraries, historic sites, schools, preservation and historical societies, community and cultural organizations, individual researchers and documentary filmmakers to bring Rhode Island’s stories to life and to amplify the state’s many diverse voices. When the organization was first founded in 1973, it was originally named the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, a typical practice for the newly formed committees/councils across the country. Over time, the name was changed to Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. As of our 50th anniversary year (2023), our organization is known as Rhode Island Humanities.

  • Thank you Kelsey Williston for capturing the spirit of connection and community that was so vital to the 2024 National Humanities Conference. We were thrilled to have you join us as a photography intern and so grateful to Evan Villari of Johnson & Wales University for helping to connect you with this opportunity.

    Passionate in Photography and Events.

Last month, I had the opportunity to intern for the Federation of State Humanities Councils at the 2024 National Humanities Conference in Providence, RI. During my time at the conference I was the photography intern, where I photographed conference attendees, tours, keynote speakers and sponsors. I had the amazing opportunity to attend the “Black History of Newport” bus tour that visited God’s Little Acre Burial Ground with?Black Heritage RI, the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House and “A Name, A Voice, A Life” exhibit with?Newport History, and the Ezra Styles House, Trinity Church, and other sites with?RI Slave History. ?It was an inspiring day of reflection as we celebrated the work of these cultural organizations to tell the stories of free and enslaved Newporters and the legacies they built. I want to thank Professor Evan Villari for connecting me with this internship and trusting my skills as a growing photographer. From the keynote sessions to interactive tours, I furthered my understanding of storytelling through a lens while being able to connect with professionals passionate about humanities.

  • Rhode Island Humanities was proud to host the National Humanities Conference (NHC) in Providence November 13-17. This gathering brought together nearly 900 attendees including participants from all over the country to share their work and to experience the public humanities in Rhode Island. Over 50 local organizations participated, ensuring that the NHC will have a long term impact here in the Ocean State. This was a record-breaking number for the NHC, which is hosted in a different location each year. The NHC is organized by the Federation of State Humanities Councils?and the National Humanities Alliance.??Read more about the NHC, see photos, and watch recordings here: https://lnkd.in/e-AgNpJ6
