Pharmacists Leading the Fight Against the Opioid Epidemic ?? Led by URI's College of Pharmacy and supported by the Rhode Island Department of Health, the Community First Responder Program is making a powerful impact by distributing free naloxone kits and providing education about the opioid epidemic right where it’s needed most! Headed by Dr. Anita Norton Jacobson, Pharm.D. ('98), clinical professor and director of the program, this initiative reaches people at community events—like farmers markets—offering life-saving medication and fostering conversations that help reduce the stigma surrounding opioid use. Dr. Jacobson emphasizes, “It's like having a fire extinguisher—being prepared can save lives.” To date, the program has distributed over 150,000 naloxone kits, empowering communities to respond to overdoses and save lives! ??
