We know chronic disease and mental health have a relationship with our patients, but how closely tied are they? Is there a pattern we can predict? This week our latest guest, Alyssa Howren, PhD, explains her latest study’s conclusions, which not only identify a pattern, but also how closely linked depression and anxiety are with such conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. You likely have a friend, family member, or colleague living with an autoimmune disease. It is one of the most common disease categories, with around 50 million Americans diagnosed with at least one autoimmune disease, while others are still searching for a diagnosis. #AutoimmuneAwarenessMonth Autoimmune Association

Hello LinkedIn community! ?? In honor of Autoimmune Awareness Month, let's embark on an educational journey to unravel the mysteries of autoimmune diseases. Knowledge is power, and by understanding these conditions, we can foster empathy, support, and awareness. ???? ?? What are Autoimmune Diseases? Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from harmful invaders, mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells. This results in a range of conditions, affecting various organs and systems within the body. Over 80 different autoimmune diseases have been identified. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, hidradenitis suppurativa and ankylosing spondylitis are just a few of them. ?? The Immune System's Role: Friend or Foe? Our immune system is like a vigilant guardian, constantly monitoring for foreign invaders. However, in autoimmune diseases, this system loses its ability to differentiate between the body's cells and external threats. This confusion leads to an immune response that damages healthy tissues, causing inflammation, pain, and dysfunction. ?? Diversity in Symptoms and Impact: Autoimmune diseases are incredibly diverse, both in symptoms and their impact on daily life. Some may primarily affect joints, leading to stiffness and pain, while others target organs such as the kidneys, heart, or skin. The variability of symptoms emphasizes the need for personalized treatment approaches and a deeper understanding of each condition. ?? Key to Awareness: Early Detection and Diagnosis: Early detection plays a crucial role in managing autoimmune diseases effectively. Increased awareness can lead to quicker diagnosis, allowing individuals to access appropriate treatment and support. Familiarizing ourselves with the signs and symptoms can empower both patients and their support networks. ?? Spreading Awareness Beyond Borders: Autoimmune Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to reach beyond borders, breaking down stigmas and fostering understanding. By sharing information, stories, and resources, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for those navigating life with autoimmune conditions.
