Gender equality isn’t just a moral obligation—it is a proven pathway to achieving peace, sustainable development, and effective climate action. The fact that less than 10% of the speakers at #UNGA79 General Debate are women underscores the deep and ongoing gender inequality that continues to permeate even the highest levels of global leadership. Equality isn’t something to strive for in theory—it’s something that must be achieved through intentional action. Our world simply cannot afford to leave behind the perspectives, ideas, and leadership of half its population. We must do better, and we must do so now!
I am sorry to see that despite years of talk, gender inequality is on full display in the United Nations General Assembly Hall during #UNGA. Less than 10% of speakers during this week’s General Debate are women. This is unacceptable – especially when we know gender equality delivers for peace, sustainable development, climate action and much more. That is precisely why we took targeted measures to achieve gender parity among United Nations senior leadership. It’s doable. I call on male-dominated political and economic establishments around the world to do it.

On July 15, 2024, California made a significant stride toward enhancing student safety as Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2608 into law. This crucial legislation, drafted and advocated for by students, including our?2023-2024 John Lewis Young Leaders Fellow?Saanvi Arora (who drafted the bill herself!), addresses the pervasive issue of drug-assisted sexual assault on college campuses. AB 2608 ensures that California college students will receive comprehensive education on the dangers of drug-facilitated sexual violence and provides campus health centers with access to essential resources, including Flumazenil, to counteract the effects of drugs like Rohypnol (otherwise known as roofies.) This accomplishment underscores the power of student-led advocacy in shaping public policy and creating safer, more informed campus environments. Congratulations,?Saanvi! Onward! Following false and derogatory claims made by former President Trump and Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance, Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, and across the country have expressed concerns for their safety. Haitian community leaders say such rhetoric has inflamed tensions and could lead to violence. More than 30 bomb threats have targeted city schools, leading to the evacuation of several facilities. When elected officials dehumanize immigrants and falsely portray them as an existential threat, they sow the seeds of violence and stigmatize an already targeted population. We can, and must, do better. Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), HAITIAN BRIDGE ALLIANCE, UndocuBlack Network.
