Meet the Banteng, a wild cattle species once abundant across Southeast Asia. Its populations are disappearing, and the species has just been reassessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Because species like the Banteng are crucial for maintaining healthy forests, this drastic decline underscores a significant threat to Southeast Asian ecosystems. But there is still hope! In Thailand’s Western Forest Complex, Banteng populations are on the rise due to strong, long-term conservation efforts. This success story shows the power of collaborative protection, and underscores the urgent need for rewilding initiatives. Protecting and expanding habitats, increasing anti-poaching measures, and rewilding species like the Banteng are crucial steps to not only save this species but also restore Southeast Asia’s delicate ecosystems. Re:wild is working alongside the IUCN Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group (@IUCN_wildcattle) and other partners to conserve wild cattle like Banteng, Tamaraw, and Saola. Together, we’re focusing on species protection, rewilding efforts, and restoring ecosystems critical to biodiversity. This Native American Heritage Month, we honor the Indigenous Peoples of Southeast Alaska and their centuries of stewardship of the Stikine River watershed and surrounding temperate rainforest in Wrangell, where culture, language and art reflect the rivers, mountains, forest, and sea. Here, salmon run through the rivers, sustaining the land and the Tlingit culture. Millions of salmon return each year, and each harvest is taken with care so that the ancient, life-giving cycle remains unbroken for generations to come. Wrangell’s incredible biodiversity includes coastal wolves, Black and Brown bears, and centuries-old, towering Sitka spruce. Yellow Cedar, also native here, is cherished by the Tlingit for its durability and is used to craft totem poles, masks, and canoes, preserving cultural stories and artistry across generations. These trees and animal are kin, woven into Tlingit heritage. This is all threatened by rapid industrialization and mining development occurring across the US-Canada border, in the headwaters of the Stikine River. In Brazil, a shocking new deforestation method is devastating ecosystems: chemical deforestation. >> https://lnkd.in/gy3NYVap This method involves herbicides rather than chainsaws, and is harder to detect through satellite imagery because it mimics natural tree death. A recent case exposes rancher Claudecy Oliveira Lemes, who allegedly hired planes to spray herbicides across 300 square miles of Pantanal forest, intentionally killing trees to make way for cattle pastures. Authorities found containers of toxic chemicals and flight record evidence. Chemical deforestation not only leaves trees lifeless and gray but contaminates soil and water, endangering wildlife and local communities. This practice exemplifies the lengths the meat industry will go to for profit—even at the expense of our most critical forests.
