Good news! Recently, 20 European fallow deer and 5 red deer were released into the Tarutino steppe in the Odessa region. The animals were brought from northern Ukraine and released into a fenced area to acclimatize to their new conditions. It is planned that by the end of autumn 2025, the fallow deer will be released into the wild. Fallow deer and red deer will play a vital role in restoring the natural balance of the steppe. Their natural grazing will help combat the encroachment of shrubs, prevent wildfires, and create favorable conditions for many plant and animal species in the steppe. ?????????????????? ???????????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ?????????? ?????????????????????? ???? ????????????! ?? A pioneering loan from Rewilding Europe Capital to the Swedish Anglers Association (Sportsfiskarna) has enabled the removal of a dam on the St?ng?n River in central Sweden! ?? This crucial step supports the free flow of water, benefitting fish and other wildlife. Dams disrupt rivers, blocking fish migration and degrading ecosystems. By removing obsolete barriers, we restore natural water flow, reconnect habitats, and improve river health. ???? The impact of such #rewilding efforts is immediate, with juvenile salmon already observed in the upstream in the St?ng?n river. ?? Rewilding Europe Capital’s Role: The loan to Sportsfiskarna represents the first time Rewilding Europe Capital has financially supported a dam removal initiative. The aim was to pilot a revolving fund for dam removal, where a loan is provided to bridge a finance gap. This innovative approach helps scale up efforts to restore rivers. ?? “Loans on friendly terms are a great way of scaling up dam removal on a revolving basis, and I would love to hear from other prospective dam removal initiatives that need finance upfront to bridge a funding gap,” says Rewilding Europe’s Conservation Finance Expert, Daniel Veríssimo. ?? A new study from the Greater C?a Valley in Portugal highlights the urgent need for a holistic approach to minimizing wildfire risks in Mediterranean landscapes. While climate change and land abandonment increase fire risk, the study highlights rewilding as a powerful solution. ?? By reintroducing free-roaming herbivores like horses and Tauros, flammable vegetation is naturally reduced, fostering diverse and resilient ecosystems. Education, public awareness, and sustainable management practices further strengthen efforts by the Rewilding Portugal team to protect these dynamic landscapes. Together, we can create safer, wilder landscapes for people and nature. ?? Restoring Rivers in Sweden, One "Drop" at a Time! ?? From the air to the riverbed, the Rewilding Sweden team has taken #RiverRestoration efforts to new heights by reintroducing vital sediment to the Abrams?n river, once altered for logging. Last month, the team organised a helicopter drop of 150 tonnes of sand and gravel to kickstart the recovery of bottom-dwelling animals essential to river health. Why does this matter? These small creatures are the foundation of a healthy food web, helping to filter water, retain nutrients, and support fish populations. ?????? Discover more about this pioneering approach in our conversation with Vebj?rn Opsanger, a Norwegian PhD student monitoring the impact of this unique restoration effort.
