IMCA D085 Guidance on Deck Decompression Chamber (DDC) Operations for the Therapeutic Treatment of Divers is now available for members to download. Historically, the ability to use DDCs in offshore surface supplied diving operations was a fundamental skill acquired by divers during diving operations. However, maintaining proficiency in operating DDCs requires continuous training and hands on experience to prevent skill fade. Due to the decreasing frequency of surface supplied diving operations, the increased use of shallow saturation diving techniques and the decline in diving projects utilising surface decompression with oxygen (SurDO2), divers have less exposure to operating DDCs – resulting in a decline in competence and confidence of diving personnel to use DDCs in diving emergencies. This has resulted in several incidents being reported to IMCA where, despite DDCs being available on the worksite, divers have surfaced with symptoms consistent with decompression illnesses (DCI) but they have not been treated in the worksite DDC. IMCA D085 provides guidance and advice for the planning, managing and conducting the operational use of DDCs in emergency situations. IMCA unites over 750 members—contractors, suppliers, energy firms, and associates across 60+ countries—to advance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in marine contracting. Our work spans developing standards for diving and ROV operations, supply chain resilience, and exploring autonomous shipping innovations, all while supporting offshore energy transitions. Set in Newport—a nexus for offshore wind and defense—this event invites stakeholders to discuss pressing challenges: How do we enhance offshore safety protocols? How do we ensure diver safety? What’s next for ROV and marine technology? How can supply chains adapt to renewable energy demands in a shifting landscape? I will work with my colleagues Richard Purser, Rhys Jones,?Bill Chilton,?and our North America Committee Chair,?Adam Dushinske, and Vice Chair Jose Owens,?to create a meaningful discussion. This is HUGE! I'm thrilled to finally announce the beginning of this (initially) two-year project, based at Stanford University, and supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The project is led by Stanford Professors Margaret Cohen (English) and Fiorenza Micheli (Marine Science), and aims to integrate humanities and ocean science research, scholarship, and teaching. Cal Maritime will bring hands on maritime experience and the unique perspectives of those who live and work on the sea, as well as offering our campus as a potential proving ground for the new curriculum.
