Great research by Andy Byrne and the team at Clari that reinforces what great sales leaders have known for years: your best reps drive outsized impact. So why do we build processes, playbooks, and performance management systems designed for the middle and bottom performers—often at the expense of the top? Early in my career, Steven Fitz and Kevin Delane—who ran 9- and 10-figure ARR teams—taught me a simple rule:?put your best reps on your best opportunities.?They were right. But doing the opposite is an easy trap to fall into. I find myself falling for it frequently. The instinct is to assign your best people to your biggest problem areas. It feels logical—but it’s fool’s gold. Your best reps belong on the best opportunities because they?maximize?them. That’s how you ensure every high-quality customer interaction is handled flawlessly. The real challenge? 1. Identifying the best opportunities with pinpoint accuracy.?Too often, the wrong accounts get outsized attention—and they’re assigned to the wrong people. 2. Scaling top performance.?Even your best reps can’t handle every high-value deal. Here’s the math: There are about 500k accounts with 100+ employees. If 25% are in your TAM, that’s 125k. Gartner data suggests only 5% are in-market at any given time—so you’re left with?6,250 active accounts. Assuming a 25% conversion from active accounts to deals and a 20% close rate, that’s?1,560 deals with 312 closed.
