Habitat loss, hunting, and illegal trade have led to the Northern River Terrapin being considered ecologically extinct in the wild. The Project Batagur Baska is working to change that. ?? Plan: Identifying remnant populations through local insights ?? Recovery: Breeding programs, habitat support, and conservation partnerships ?? Results: 400+ juveniles raised, successful reintroduction efforts underway This initiative is restoring hope for one of the world’s most endangered turtles. ???? via Reverse the Red

#HoeDierentuinenHelpen #HowZoosHelp #SavingSpeciesTogether Filmpje? https://lnkd.in/eJskDdzN European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) Emile Prins #ZooConservation Reverse the Red #EEP #stamboek #ZooConservation

?? Amphibians are key indicators of our planet’s health, yet they are disappearing at an alarming rate. Over 2,400 of the 8,500+ known amphibian species face extinction due to climate change and human activities. As the most threatened class of vertebrates, their survival is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. This #WorldWildlifeDay, we emphasize the power of innovative financing to scale conservation efforts. Investing in wildlife means safeguarding ecosystems, economies, and future generations. Today, on World Wildlife Day, we celebrate the incredible #diversity of #life on our #planet – its beauty, resilience, and the essential role it plays in sustaining humanity. Biodiversity is the foundation of our existence, providing the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the ecosystems that regulate our climate. Protecting #wildlife isn’t just about conservation – it’s about safeguarding the very systems that allow #people, communities, and economies to thrive. A thriving planet is essential for a thriving #economy, and we are seeing encouraging momentum. But to make a real difference, every sector must step up. Governments, businesses, financial institutions and civil society must commit to Nature-Positive outcomes, ensuring that #conservation is not just a priority but an investment in our shared #future. At IUCN, we are bridging the gap between conservation and #finance. Initiatives like the WALD Innovation Facility, the Blue Natural Capital Financing Facility, and the Blue Carbon Accelerator Fund are unlocking new opportunities to direct investments into projects that benefit both people and nature. The message is clear: financing wildlife conservation is not a cost – it is an investment in #resilience, #sustainability, and #prosperity. Let’s seize this moment to build a world where nature and people thrive together.

Taipei Zoo Hosts Series of Activities for Endangered Species Awareness, from Reverse The Red Day to World Pangolin Day From February 7th, marking the beginning of Reverse The Red Day, through to World Pangolin Day, Taipei Zoo has been holding a series of engaging events to raise awareness about endangered species. The events kicked off with an exhibit “Right Where Lives Belong” at the Education Center showcasing the importance of species conservation, followed by a special display of the IUCN endangered and critically endangered species distribution maps throughout the zoo. On World Pangolin Day, the zoo held a special event featuring female scientists, alongside veterinarians and conservationists, who work on pangolin rescue and rewilding. The event provided an opportunity for the public to hear firsthand about the challenges involved in rescuing and caring for these unique animals. Additionally, the zoo invited nearby Junior high school students and elementary schools teachers to participate in interactive educational games designed to teach visitors about pangolins. These activities not only helped deepen the understanding of pangolin conservation, but also encouraged everyone to take action to protect the species and its natural habitat. Through these activities, the zoo successfully combined education, fun, and hands-on experiences to foster a stronger connection between the public and the importance of wildlife conservation, especially for endangered species like the pangolin.

? Big win for a little bird ? Using artificial intelligence (AI), the Plains-wanderer has been rediscovered roaming in Melbourne’s west for the first time in more than 30 years! Zoos Victoria has deployed 35 audio recorders, known as ‘song meters’, in Victoria’s Volcanic Plains to listen out for this is elusive and Critically Endangered Australian endemic bird. Using a set of AI call recognisers designed by Museums Victoria Research Institute and Queensland University of Technology, the song meters are identifying the species’ unique calls where it was once abundant but not been recorded since 1989. AHHH-MAZING. Shout out to Museums Victoria, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action
