Here’s my hot take on Cybersecurity Talent Tango: ??Corporate cybersecurity leaders and recruiters: “We don’t have the right depth of talent and experience! The market is flooded, but we can’t find the right skillset within our budget.” ??My response: First, your job description reads like you are trying to find a unicorn capable of riding a magic fairy dust powered Segway (see image). Talent is out there, but the right combination of skills, experience, and willingness to forgo sleep can be rare. Are you focusing too much on technical wizardry and not enough on problem-solving aptitude? How much effort are you putting into building, grooming, and growing talent, instead of having AI write your job descriptions? #JustSaying ??Cybersecurity job applicant: “It sure doesn’t seem like the statistic of ‘hundreds of thousands of open and unfilled jobs’ seems accurate. The jobs I’m applying for have hundreds if not thousands of candidates within days!” ??My response: Many jobs (especially on LinkedIn) don’t have a lot of filters and qualification checks. The “single click apply” option creates all sorts of junk in recruiter queues so don’t immediately be discouraged. I find that very few candidates actually reach out to the hiring manager or a team member, so don’t sleep on the power of networking. Be realistic with the jobs you are going for and your experience level. It’s ok to make a play for a jump in level, but be realistic with where you are in your career and experience and consider opportunities that will allow you to grow into the big jobs that you ultimately desire.
