A federal judge in Texas known for frequently ruling in favor of conservative litigants has handed Democratic President Joe Biden's administration and Special Counsel Jack Smith a pair of victories in lawsuits steered to his courthouse in Amarillo. U.S. District Judge?Matthew Kacsmaryk, who President-elect Donald Trump appointed during his first term in office, on Nov. 26?dismissed a?lawsuit?by a conservative think tank challenging the U.S. Department of Energy's energy-efficiency requirements for household clothes washers and dishwashers. Kacsmaryk did so a day after he?rejected, what he called an 'unserious' effort by Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to block Smith from potentially destroying records related to his criminal investigations into Trump without plausible allegations he was doing so. A federal judge in San Francisco has temporarily blocked a former Citigroup private banker from using confidential information related to Citi's law firm clients following his move to competitor Bank of Montreal. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer on Nov. 26?ordered?John Mitchell, a former managing director in Citi Global Wealth at Work's law firm unit, to return any of the bank's records within 24 hours. Australia moved closer on Nov. 26 to banning social media for children under 16 after the parliament's lower house passed a bill even as Alphabet's?Google and Facebook-owner Meta pressed the government to delay the legislation. Marking some of the toughest social media controls in the world, Australia's House of Representatives passed the bill 102 votes to 13 after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's centre-left Labor government secured bipartisan support for the ban. The Senate is expected to debate the bill later on Nov. 27, with the government keen to ensure it is passed by the end of the parliamentary year on Nov. 28. Albanese, trying to lift his approval ratings ahead of an election expected in May, has argued that excessive use of social media poses risks to the physical and mental health of children and is looking for support from parents. The prospect of a law school in El Paso, Texas, has been discussed locally for decades. Now there’s a price tag: Launching a new law school at the University of Texas at El Paso would cost $20 million over a decade, according to a feasibility study commissioned by state lawmakers. 'The study shows there is a need for legal services in West Texas, and, with sufficient financial support to start it up, this study shows that it is sustainable for the long term,' UTEP President Heather Wilson said. The UTEP feasibility study assumes the new law school would open in 2030. ? Read more top news in The Afternoon Docket. Subscribe: https://reut.rs/3ZptFYe

New York’s highest state court on Nov. 25 joined the nationwide consensus in state and federal courts that consumers can be compelled to arbitrate claims if they have been offered a real opportunity to review online contract terms and have clicked their assent. It’s not surprising,?writes Reuters Legal columnist alison frankel, that the?N.Y. Court of Appeals?gave the OK to so-called clickwrap contracts – but the unique facts of the case mean that may not be the end of the story for the?Uber?rider who challenged the company’s retroactive arbitration requirement for personal injury plaintiffs. Rank-and-file attorneys in the federal government fear major budget cuts when President-elect?Donald Trump?assumes office and are hunting for private-sector jobs in unusually high numbers, five legal recruiters told Reuters. Each new administration sparks an exodus of political appointees and other senior legal officials, but the recruiters said they are also hearing from far more lower-level, career government lawyers this year. More than 44,000 licensed attorneys serve in the federal government, according to March data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. About a third of those lawyers work in the Justice Department, and fewer than 400 of them are non-career political appointees. Trump has accused government lawyers of frustrating his first-term agenda and faced two federal criminal indictments by what he described as a politicized Biden Justice Department. His nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, has called for an investigation into how those cases were prosecuted. Washington boasts one of the country's top legal markets, with dozens of firms that take advantage of the revolving door between government and corporate law. Senior lawyers leaving the Biden administration may have an easy time finding jobs at companies and big law firms, which are?flush with cash?this year. About 80% of aspiring lawyers rated their law school experience as either 'good' or 'excellent' on the annual Law School Survey of Student Engagement, but satisfaction rates were lower among students of color than among white students. The survey, part of Indiana University's Center for Postsecondary Research, marked its 20th edition this month with a look back at how student diversity, debt loads, career plans and satisfaction levels have changed - or not - during that time. More than 425,000 law students have participated in the Law School Survey of Student Engagement since 2004, the study said. Overall satisfaction rates have remained stable despite mounting research pointing to elevated rates of stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges among law students. In the 2021 survey, 91% of all students said the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in at least 'some' increase in their mental or emotional exhaustion, yet 78% still rated their law school experience as 'good' or 'excellent.'
