ReUp is honored to work alongside the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE) to support their 750,000+ residents who started their higher education journey but haven’t yet completed their degrees. Through New Jersey’s ‘Some College, No Degree’ initiative and a partnership with 22 higher education institutions in the state, ReUp has helped more than 8,600 adult learners re-enroll and more than 350 adult learners graduate. “Stefani Thachik, senior advisor in the [New Jersey] Higher Education agency, told NJBIZ that her office is excited about how the partnership has gone with ReUp and the higher ed institutions. ‘And I think what’s been great to see is kind of early on, we really focused on the re-enrollment piece – and we’re, of course, still focused on that,’ said Thachik. ‘But we’re also really focusing on persistence. So, beginning to see some of those graduation numbers – it’s just really exciting. Unexpected life circumstances can derail an adult learner’s path toward completing their education, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t find their way back. Alex C. originally enrolled in college to pursue his passion for electrical engineering, but stepped away when a lung cancer diagnosis required him to focus on his health. After battling and beating lung cancer and serving as his mother’s caretaker over the last decade before she passed away, Alex faced several circumstances beyond his control, each shaping his outlook on life and his path back to college. With the support of ReUp, Alex re-enrolled in school and is now on his way to earning his electrical engineering degree, but his experience has meant so much more: “This journey back to school has been about more than just getting a degree. This tailored approach [by ReUp] has been particularly successful in re-enrolling adult learners from underrepresented communities, especially those from Black and Latinx backgrounds, ensuring that every learner can achieve their educational goals and access the life-changing credentials that will empower them to thrive." Only 2.6% of stopouts re-enroll annually — and just 37% return to their original institution. This tells us two things: 1) stopout learners face significant barriers to returning, and 2) many institutions struggle to reach and support them effectively.
