Today is Veterans Day in the US, when we remember the men and women who have served our country. Thank you Veterans for your courage and dedication during your time in the uniformed services! Our advice for engaging with those who you think might have been in the service is to ask one question: Were you ever in the service? If that individual was in the service but doesn’t want to talk about it, that’s ok. Don’t push it. If the person is a Veteran and wants to talk about it, you will get an enthusiastic response. If you so dare, ask a follow up: what did you do and where were you stationed? THEN be prepared for an hour long conversation about their service! There are many reasons and motivations for people who did serve, but the statistics tell us one thing about Veterans: they are more likely to serve, whether the community, church, or in other ways even after leaving the military. In fact, the bulk of the current US Veteran population served in the last 30 years. If you’d like to know more, here are some statistics on Veterans: https://lnkd.in/e8CqBcxn #VeteransDay #ThankYouForYourService #HonoringAllWhoServed #Gratitude

CEOs, Presidents, Senior VPs, Hiring Managers and HR Professionals – Department of Defense (DoD) data show that 68% of military who participate in the services’ uniform-to-civilian internship program both get a written offer and take the job.?In the recruiting world, that is an astronomical statistic. There are TWO DoD-approved internship programs that anyone with the need to hire in 2024-2025 should be integrating into their hiring strategy NOW. If you hired anyone in 2024 and did not ensure your hiring strategy included a dedicated plan to attract, interview, intern, evaluate and hire a military-connected person, there is a very good chance you spent more money than necessary, lost productivity, took on unnecessary risk and missed opportunities to enhance your brand and influence your culture. It’s not too late to start in 2024 and plan for 2025. Here is a real-world 2024 example: A military-member with 7+ years experience as an engineer wanted a role as a project manager at a major corporation back at home.?We found a great match for both the military member and the company, which included a 90-day internship learning new skills and meshing with the people on the team. Based on a monthly salary of $10,800, the company saved $14,500 in compensation. The company also eliminated hiring risk because there was no commitment to hire unless it was a good fit.?At the 45-day mark, the company and the military member BOTH knew it was a good fit.?An offer was made and accepted at the 70-day mark, and the engineer’s learning during the internship resulted in accelerated productivity at NO COST to the company at Day 90. If you would like to know how Return To Home Port? can boost your ROI by implementing this hiring strategy, please contact us at:? www.return2homeport.com. #Startups #FirstHire #ROI #HiringSuccess #BusinessGrowth #Leadership #Entrepreneurship

Demographic Data: Data show there are 82.5% men and 17.5% women, with a demographic mix that mirrors the general population. All of these military people have attributes, experience, skill sets, and a proven track record that employers need. Source:? https://lnkd.in/eygjBZ3E RTHP Recruiting Data: Our internal data show that 500 (33%) are considering a Skillbridge internship with employers and 600 (40%) intend to use fully-funded education benefits at some point now or in the future. For Employers: Skillbridge is a military version of an internship, apprenticeship, and training program that lowers costs, eliminates hiring risk, improves talent, and accelerates time to productivity. The most common categories we have engaged with so far in 2024:? Junior/Senior Project Managers. Finance. Logistics. Supply chain. Skilled Trades. Engineers. Cyber. IT. Leadership. Training. Congressional and Government Affairs. Medical. For Learning Institutions: with a demographic and demand cliff already affecting enrollments, it makes sense to attract fully-funded students now for Academic Year 2025-2026 and beyond. We have established digital marketing and in-person talent recruitment for military-connected students – have you? If your institution only focuses on the GI Bill but doesn’t know about 3 other key sources of Department of Defense or Veterans Administration funding, ask Return To Home Port?! We at Return To Home Port? were proud to support the CPO Pride March yesterday in Chicago!
Friends and Colleagues, Those who were in The Loop in downtown Chicago yesterday morning saw 100s of Navy servicemembers marching in the Chicago region's Annual Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Pride March. Composed of CPOs and Chief Selects from the Chicago-area units like Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL), Naval Service Training Command and U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC), which is Navy's boot camp hosted at NSGL, the formation arrived at the Eternal Flame in Daley Plaza across from City Hall at 10:55am before continuing on their march at 11:20am. The Chief Petty Officers, known collectively as 'The Goat Locker', are the senior enlisted ranks and the backbone of the Navy.? To earn promotion to CPO takes many years of hard work, leadership, outstanding performance, testing, and applied knowledge and is a HUGE accomplishment for any Sailor.? Think about combining graduation from college along with passing the bar and you can understand how important a milestone 'Making Chief' is to a Sailor and to the US Navy. The bottom line: 'Making Chief' is the result of many years of dedication, multiple deployments away from home, and steely determination by the Sailors and their loved ones. A special note of congratulations to the spouses of these CPO Selects. You have been integral to your Sailor's success! The Navy system is such that the new Chiefs are notified in early August of their promotion, and they undergo a 6-week initiation period which culminates this year on Sep 27th.?The march is part of that initiation for the new CPOs in Chicago. It was great to re-connect unexpectedly with one of my former Sailors from 13 years ago, then-AD2 Zinzani, who is now ADC Zinzani. What a joy to see him! The Selectees also heard remarks from Navy Reservist LCDR Bill Conway about how these current and future CPOs do extraordinary things. LCDR Conway had a short commute from City Hall to the Eternal Flame since in his day job LCDR Conway is Alderman of Chicago's 34th Ward. Hats off to the organizers and to the Chief Selects! BRAVO ZULU to them all! #Navy #NavyChiefs #GoatLocker #ChiefSelects #GreatLakes #NavyRecruiting

Labor Day 2024 Today marks Labor Day. Take a moment today to reflect on the power of your work and the difference you can make. Every single person has been given two things by God: time and talent. It matters how we choose to use each. If we are leaders in an organization, how we create opportunities for our teammates to maximize both will affect our outcomes. If we have neither the time nor the talent for a professional pursuit, there will be no results. If we have a mismatch in either case, talent without time or time without talent, we won’t be effective in our professional endeavors. If we choose to be thoughtful in our approach and honest with ourselves, we can identify the best professional path to pursue based on our own talents, and the time we have available to develop these talents into skill sets that contribute to fulfillment for ourselves, satisfaction for our families and contributions to our communities. The same concept holds true for leaders: do this for those you are entrusted to lead. At Return To Home Port?, we focus on early human capital development as a key to maximize potential on a personal and professional level. Don’t waste time. Don’t waste talent. Be purposeful in a plan to synthesize both. While our company develops connections between the civilian sector and military community through a thorough understanding of Department of Defense (DoD) and the services’ programs, processes, people, our concepts like a 5-year Career Plan can be adopted by any employer, whether a company, firm, union, university or organization that counts on its people to perform. National Lefthanders Day – Navy Bosuns! One of the best things about serving in the military is being part of traditions that endure through time. These traditions give us a cultural framework in which military life can unfold, while connecting us with past generations, hearing their echoes resonate in our lives in the service. In particular, the Navy is steeped in traditions, including those from the days of sail, whether lingo, equipment, or communications. One enduring tradition in today’s Navy that encompasses all three belongs to the Boatswain Mates, the oldest rating in the US Navy… the backbone of any ship’s crew. The tradition is the Bosun and his bosun whistle. Any Navy member knows this unique sound, especially while underway, hearing the Bosun’s whistle multiple times a day to communicate information and instructions, including for Sweepers! We at Return To Home Port? know the importance of keeping traditions alive.? A Bosun puts in many hours of practice to hone his craft, including the different pitches and trills of his whistle. A Bosun also must demonstrate ambidexterity as this picture points out. Normally, servicemembers salute with their right hands – a Bosun sometimes does so with his left! His efforts though are worth it, as it makes the Navy a better service. So, Happy National Lefthanders Day to all southpaws out there, especially to those Navy Bosuns who only might be lefthander for a moment – your dedication to your craft is noteworthy and appreciated – even during Sweepers! Today is Purple Heart Day in the United States. Throughout the year, the Return To Home Port? team comes into contact with dozens of recipients of this award.? Two weeks ago, in one of our meetings with a Veterans Services Officer (VSO) in Minnesota, our team member noticed a Purple Heart citation on the wall.? He asked about it, and it turned out the VSO was a Purple Heart Recipient. It can be a sensitive subject to ask about the circumstances in which a military member received a Purple Heart, and there isn't a one-size fits all answer of how to ask.? So, just be respectful and ask about the Purple Heart.? Most recipients will share their story.? Those who would rather not share it, will say so. In any case, recognizing the cost of war is something we should all do.? This post today is to recognize those who are still with us who did pay a price -- those recipients of the Purple Heart. A good source of information about the Purple Heart is available here:?https://lnkd.in/eiuwBhW #PurpleHeartDay #militarycommunity #army #navy #airforce #marines #spaceforce #coastguard

Chicago Colleagues and Leaders, Tomorrow, Mon, Aug 5 starts Navy Week in Chicago culminating at Chicago's Air & Water Show next weekend Aug 10-11 with the Navy's Blue Angels as headliners. During Navy Week, you will see more of a sustained US Navy presence in Chicago, with the schedule available here: https://lnkd.in/gtm3yfWT The US Navy's presence in Chicago is 24/7/365 however. From Navy Pier (in the upper left of this picture), out to Midway Airport on the Southwest Side, to O'Hare Airport on the Northwest Side continuing out to Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, there is a history and continuity of the Navy in this city. U-505. Chicago Maritime Museum. The Naval ROTC Consortium. NFL Hall of Famers George Halas and Paddy Driscoll who were both Great Lakes Sailors and football players on the Great Lakes team BEFORE the NFL was founded, principally by Halas. There are lots of examples. Why does this matter to YOU? Because Great Lakes is Navy's only Boot Camp with more than 36,000 Sailors going through in 2023, is the largest training facility in terms of acreage, and is staffed by 20,000+ active duty and civilian personal, Chicago people have the first chance to connect with these service- and community-oriented Sailors when they finish Boot Camp, and the outstanding 20,000+ personnel who support them. The Navy is very selective with the officers, Chiefs and Sailors who develop the next generation of Sailors. In other words, Chicago gets top Navy talent up at Great Lakes. I encourage you to engage with the newest Sailors and understand the level of performance and dedication of those who train them! If you see a Sailor in town this week, start with these three questions: 1. Where are you stationed? 2. What do you do? 3. What's your long-term plan? You might be surprised at the level of acumen, dedication and interest that these Sailors, whether the newest Sailors or the 'Old Salts', show to you and Chicago in return. Many of these Sailors would thrive in the Chicago connection of neighborhoods and neighbors. For most, that day is further down their career path, in the future. For some, that day is closer. But one day, some might return to Chicago as their homeport. You might encourage them in that. After all, Chicago is a Navy town. - Dave Sauve P.S. That picture is from American Airlines Flight 2924.
