Very excited to report that RETI Center has obtained an Off-bottom Macroalgae Culture Permit! This permit allows for the cultivation of Sugar Kelp (Saccharina latissima) in the Gowanus Bay. Sugar Kelp is a brown seaweed that can be used for a variety of purposes, from food to fertilizer, cosmetics to cement alternatives, and bio-plastics to bio-fuels (in addition to being a natural carbon sink). In this case, the kelp will be used to measure the bio-accumulation of heavy metals in Gowanus Bay and to conduct citizen science projects with cement additives and bio-plastics. The cultivation process also aims to serve as a visceral reminder that New York is a city of water, connected to the broader blue economy ???? ?? . Thanks to the helpful staff at the NYC DCP, NYS DEC, NYS DOS, and the Army Corps of Engineers for their review and approvals. It's been quite a process to permit this unique use case. From qualified job seekers trained in solar, to grad students and experienced individuals looking to transition into clean energy, the room was filled with energy (no pun intended).
