It's 6:58pm. My heart is RACING. I'm worried it will come out of my chest. I am locked in my home office clicking refresh on a Chrome tab. Boom. It's 7pm. I'm in. On the screen, I see each of my children's names: Bryn, Aubrey, and Ryan. I can choose which name to click. Now begins my carefully executed strategy. First, I click on my son's name because I know from experience that the preschoolers' after-school activities fill up the fastest. I make his selections: Lego and Spanish. Click click click—DONE. I got them. No time to celebrate. Moving on to Bryn. Roblox and Musical Theater. Click click click—DONE. Now, last but not least: Aubrey. I reassure myself that I didn't pick her last because she’s a neglected middle child. This is all part of my strategy. Her choices are the least competitive, and I know she'll be flexible if her first picks fill up. (Wait… maybe that is a middle child thing?) Anyway, there's no time to be distracted about this. Click click click—DONE. It's 7:05pm, and you can probably hear me cheering from down the block. For the first time ever, all three of my kids got into their first-choice after-school activities. Why am I cheering about this? Why am I writing about this? Because this isn't just about after-school activities. It's about the invisible labor, the mental load, the planning, the stress, the strategy that so often falls on moms. It’s about thinking five steps ahead, anticipating and balancing everyone's needs, and still questioning if you did the right thing. It's a lot and it is worth cheering for. On this International Women's Day, I want to recognize all the moms who are out here making life run smoothly for the people they love. The ones setting alarms, refreshing tabs, packing lunches, making plans, and carrying the weight of a million tiny things that add up to a good life for the humans they're raising.
