Sometimes a panel can change your entire perspective on an issue. One health worker, changed the prospect of burn care in an entire region of Africa. One advocate, changed the accountability on acid burns in an entire nation #Colombia . One health worker at a time, transforms lives for cleft children. Systems works is critical, but so is the work of a health worker and an advocate. I have been so deeply touched by this event, that any opportunity I get to advocate for surgical capacity in low resources settings, I do ! I also now personally donate to three organizations that organized this ReSurge International Operation Smile Smile Train ! And it was fantastic the group took a gender lens, focused on women as not only receipients of care but drives of change, as providers. #CSW69 #CSW68 Keep up the advocacy, but more importantly keep up the local action. Thanks Natalie Meyers, MPH Laura Hoemeke, DrPH, MPH
As we prepare for #CSW69, we’re reflecting on the special event we hosted during last year’s impactful session, titled “The Road to Universal Health Coverage: Investing in Women Healthcare Providers,” in partnership with The G4 Alliance, ReSurge International, Women in Global Health, and the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA).?? ? The session explored the crucial role of investing in women healthcare providers to strengthen the global health workforce and advance #UniversalHealthCoverage. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from industry experts and thought leaders about actionable strategies for empowering women in healthcare leadership roles. Our very own Co-founder, President, and CEO, Kathy Magee, gave the keynote speech, while Dr. Elizabeth Coté, our VP of Global Medical Education, facilitated the panel, moderated by Dr. Padmini Murthy MD , MPH , MS, FAMWA , FRSPH. Speakers included Dr. Fetiya Awol, Dr. Dr. Roopa Dhatt, Natalie Meyers, MPH, and Irene Devine Dzirasa. In case you missed it, you can watch the full session recording here: https://lnkd.in/eCfTScGY ? We’re excited to continue these important conversations at #CSW69 and explore how we can further support women in health care! As we prepare for #CSW69 tomorrow, we reflect on our continued efforts to close the gender equity gap in reconstructive surgical care. Last year, ReSurge International was honored to host a panel at the 68th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women on March 11th, 2024. Entitled “Girls on Fire: The Gendered Outcomes of Burn Injuries” our session focused on the prevalence of burn injuries — a global health issue that disproportionately affects women and girls: https://bit.ly/41ShGT2 We are excited to continue the conversation again tomorrow at #CSW69 on a panel: "Beijing at 30: Investing in Women to Build Access to Surgical Care" alongside leading voices from the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA), Gender Equity Initiative in Global Surgery, and Operation Smile. Join us and watch this space for updates, moments, and action live from the event. RSVP: bit.ly/41ndfj7

This past Saturday night, I had the privilege of attending a charity dinner in support of ReSurge International—an incredible organization dedicated to providing life-changing reconstructive surgeries and training medical professionals in underserved communities around the world. It was an evening filled with meaningful conversations, shared purpose, and inspiring stories about the impact Resurge is making. Knowing that their work restores not only function but also dignity and hope to so many lives is truly humbling. And of course, The Progress—a Michelin-recognized gem in San Francisco—provided an unforgettable dining experience. I am also grateful for Nishta Giallorenzo for inviting us and sharing your passion for Resurge. If you’re looking for a cause to support, this is one that’s changing lives in a very tangible way. #ResurgeInternational #GivingBack #Leadership #Community #CharityDinner #Impact

It was an absolute honor to give a guest lecture at Stanford University, "An Introduction to Global Health"?for Dr. James Chang's sophomore seminar,?"Surgical Anatomy of the Hand: From Rodin to Reconstruction." I've been fortunate to speak on panels I once only dreamed of, but addressing these undergraduate students at such a pivotal moment in global health felt especially profound. With the dismantling of USAID, and the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. government's role in foreign assistance, I grappled with how to speak both realistically and with some measure of optimism—while personally feeling the deep loss of programs, jobs, and institutions I hold dear. The only silver lining I can see is the opportunity for us as a #globalhealth sector to build back better. To reimagine the dynamics, so that decolonization and localization aren't just lofty ideals, but firmly established realities. I am deeply grateful—to still have a job in this shifting environment, to work alongside incredible colleagues at?ReSurge International?as we continue to strengthen local capacity in surgical care, and to trusted mentors who offered advice on how to approach this lecture.?Global health has given me lifelong friendships, transformative experiences, and a deep appreciation for humanity—and for that, I am beyond fortunate. A special thank you to?Dr. James Chang?for his unwavering male allyship, mentorship, and for opening doors and opportunities that have shaped my journey these past 5 years with ReSurge International Thanks for the support!
