Nevada is among the numerous states having to confront budget deficits and find new, creative ways to plug funding gaps. “What these governments must not do, however, is drain the life-saving funds from the $50 billion national opioids settlements to cover their shortfalls,” writes RFA’s Patrick Carter and Shatterproof’s Kristen Pendergrass. Those settlements, totalling in the billions across the next decade, should provide life-saving, evidence-based practices to the countless victims of the opioid epidemic, not act as a slush fund for the state. Using data in workforce development doesn’t have to be overwhelming. State and local governments across the country are already proving that. At our Miami Kick-Off event, 10+ state and local governments launched projects and learned how to use data and evidence to drive real impact in their communities. Here’s what we learned: ?? Evidence matters. You don’t have to guess if a program is working, and you can use data to know for sure. And that power isn’t just for researchers—it’s for everyone. ?? Data collection doesn’t have to be daunting. Small adjustments or big-picture changes —every piece of information helps to improve and refine workforce programs. ?? Procurement is impactful. The way grants and contracts are structured can incentivize evidence-based decision-making, leading to stronger, more effective programs. This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to keep the momentum going. ?? Want free resources or invites to future events?
