Tackling climate change is a serious business. Our farm-scale 100 tonne CO?/year biochar pilot project in Cornwall is launching in July 2024, and we’ve decided to document our journey through a podcast. Join us as we share our story, from conception to implementation, and together, let's make a difference to our climate and the way we farm. Earlier this week, Prof Myles Allen, who leads CO2RE's work on national and international research engagement, and Restord, the biochar start-up founded by Tom Previte, were both featured on Panorama, the BBC News investigative programme. The episode, titled "Can Scientists Save the World?" looked at different kinds of technology that is being developed to help fight climate change. The episode also featured Restord partners CapChar. If you're in the UK, you can watch it on iPlayer: https://lnkd.in/efW8VjU2 Make sure you check out Restord's podcast Grounded, which was funded by CO2RE and recently won Gold at the Signal Awards! https://linktr.ee/Restord Find out more about biochar here: https://lnkd.in/dFhFp9YQ Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network University of Oxford, Department of Physics Richard Bilton

Exciting News: UK Sets New Standards for Carbon Market The UK Government has introduced a set of Principles for Voluntary Carbon and Nature Market Integrity, aiming to strengthen carbon markets and ensure they support global climate and biodiversity goals. These principles provide much-needed guidance for organisations engaging in carbon credit markets and promote transparency, accountability, and environmental integrity. Key Highlights of the Principles: ? Ambitious Actions First: Credits should supplement—not replace—efforts to reduce emissions within value chains. ? High-Integrity Credits: Credits must meet strict criteria, including independent validation, prevention of double counting, and mitigation of social or environmental harms. ? Transparent Reporting: Organisations are encouraged to disclose credit use in sustainability reports to build public trust. ? Planning and Cooperation: Buyers should establish clear strategies for achieving net zero and collaborate with others to build standardised, high-integrity markets. ? Accurate Green Claims: Clear terminology is essential to avoid misleading environmental claims. Access the full document here: https://lnkd.in/e_8QitbE At Restord, we see this as a crucial step forward in ensuring the credibility of carbon markets, particularly for methods like biochar, and other carbon removal methods. Clear principles like these are vital as we work to scale sustainable solutions for the climate crisis. Learn more about our biochar project: https://linktr.ee/restord

BBC Panorama *usually* investigates and exposes wrongdoing, corruption, and social injustices. So what were they doing down at our pilot biochar project? A few weeks ago, Tom Previte had the pleasure of hosting Richard Bilton and the BBC Panorama team on our pilot site in Cornwall. Their programme “Can Scientists Save the World?” sees Panorama meet with scientists and projects all over the world tackling climate change… including us! Now that production is complete, we’re thrilled to announce that Restord will be featured in tonight’s episode of BBC’s Panorama alongside our partners CapChar Finally going global? We’ll let you be the judge. Tune in tonight 8pm on BBC One #Biochar #BBCPanorama #Sustainability

You may have met Ashley, but do you know how it works? Ashley is our pyrolysis machine, and in this video, Adam from CapChar gives a quick walkthrough, explaining how each part contributes to biochar production. We partnered with Capchar for the pyrolysis machine. In episode 3 of Grounded podcast, Tom shares the story of how this collaboration came about and what it entails. New Biomass Partnership? We are excited to share our pioneering partnership with CORMAC for Restord’s pilot biochar facility. Biomass is a crucial aspect in any biochar project and this partnership will ensure our project will receive a steady supply of biomass, serving as a sustainable waste management avenue for Cormac. The project is also strengthened by the University of Plymouth’s Net Zero Entrepreneurial Futures team, contributing crucial academic support for the project to ensure adherence with scientific standards. Tom talked about how this partnership came about in episode 7 of our award winning podcast, Grounded. Major Milestone from COP29: Article 6.4 Standards Approved! Yesterday marked a significant milestone in carbon market regulations as Article 6.4 standards for methodologies and removals have been approved at COP29. This decision sets the foundation for robust, internationally recognized guidelines on carbon reduction and removal projects. The implications of this development include: ?Regulatory Clarity: these standards provide uniform guidelines for carbon reduction and removal. ?Support for Innovation: Encourages growth in carbon removal technologies like biochar. ?Enhanced Market Trust: Increases confidence in verified carbon offsets. ?Progress on Climate Goals: Aligns removal efforts with Paris Agreement targets. This development affirms our commitment to biochar as a sustainable carbon removal solution. With transparent standards, we are more equipped than ever to contribute to climate goals, converting waste into a durable form of carbon stored in soil for agricultural use. Stay tuned for more CDR updates from COP29! #COP29 #Article6 #CarbonRemoval #CarbonCredit

COP29 begins today in Baku, Azerbaijan. We are looking forward to seeing what meaningful conversations and actionable steps for carbon removal come from this years’ COP. In the meantime, here is a non-COP video of Tom explaining the differences between biochar and charcoal. The first look at the black, light-weight, porous substance called biochar and you know you’ve seen it before. Well, probably not. While biochar looks very similar to charcoal, the two are different in a lot of ways. In this video, Tom answers one of our frequently asked questions by explaining the key distinctions between biochar and charcoal—from how they’re made and what they are made of, to their specific uses and the temperatures they’re burnt at. Think of any other difference between biochar and charcoal? Here is a glimpse of one of the concluding steps in our biochar production! Watch us empty Ashley (the pyrolysis machine) and weigh freshly produced biochar. What’s fascinating is how the weight of wood transforms during pyrolysis. When wood is converted into biochar, it can lose about 60-75% of its original mass depending on the type of wood, pyrolysis temperature and duration. For example, one tonne of wood can yield between 200-400 kg of biochar. So, it’s important to us to constantly track the weight of inputs (wood) and outputs (biochar) of our production. This is one of the activities you would expect on a typical day on site. Tom talks more on this and other regular (mostly manual) activities that keep the project running on episode 8 of the podcast.
