Today marks an exciting milestone for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine as they break ground on their new 300,000-SF interdisciplinary education and biomedical research facility in Columbia’s flourishing BullStreet District. This state-of-the-art building will feature cutting-edge education, including a simulated hospital and clinic, a dedicated home for the Ultrasound Institute, active learning classrooms, human structures, student commons, study and collaboration spaces, a research wing with specialty labs, interdisciplinary wet and dry research labs, additional support spaces, and a café. This expansion will help shape the future of medical education while supporting South Carolina’s growing need for health professionals and researchers. SLAM, the design architect, collaborated with local architecture firm, BOUDREAUX, while Gilbane Development Company led teams throughout the entire process. Other key team members in this highly cooperative project include construction manager, Cummings, construction manager and minority business, Brownstone, development consultant and minority- and women-owned business, Restoration 52 LLC, and laboratory programmer and planner, Research Facilities Design (RFD). Construction is officially underway at the University of South Carolina's new School of Medicine! This state-of-the-art, 300,000+ square-foot facility is set to revolutionize healthcare education and research. It will feature advanced classrooms, medical simulation spaces, a health sciences library, interdisciplinary research labs, and collaborative learning environments. “This is an exciting step forward in the realization of the vision for the University of South Carolina’s new Health Sciences campus. This innovative project will result in a prestigious facility that will benefit the entire state of South Carolina by creating jobs and educating the state’s future medical professionals. A great milestone achieved!

NEWS: University of South Carolina Plans School of Medicine -- The University of South Carolina is planning to begin construction in 2025 on the School of Medicine Columbia. Serving as the centerpiece of a $300 million campus, the 300,000-sf facility will feature active learning classrooms, extensive medical simulation spaces, interdisciplinary laboratories, and a health science library. An adjoining biomedical research wing will advance the creation of novel therapies and treatments, with a central landscaped courtyard offering settings for informal exchange. Gilbane Building Company is spearheading the planning and development efforts for the public-private development, in collaboration with SLAM as lead design architect and BOUDREAUX as associate architect. Other team members include construction manager Brownstone, project manager Cummings, operations manager Honeywell, and real estate partner Restoration 52. Completion is expected by 2027. Incorporating a new central utility plant, the 16-acre site could accommodate up to four additional structures. A second facility for biomedical discovery will catalyze innovation and aid in the attraction and retention of world-class faculty, investigators, and students.
