Medicaid is the largest single provider of health care coverage and the largest single source of federal funding for states, serving nearly 80 million Americans. Congress is poised to cut up to $2.3 trillion in Medicaid funding over the next 10 years – a move that would not only put millions of Americans at risk for losing their health care coverage, but would also create a devastating problem for those who remain covered and for all 50 states and the U.S. territories that are responsible for continuing to administer the program. Our day-to-day experiences of citizenship too closely resemble bureaucratic nightmares—working with an agency can often lead to a confusing mess of paperwork. Whether a person is registering to vote, filing taxes, or starting a business, the unpleasantness of bureaucracy and poor UX design leads to demonstrably worse outcomes. Our mission is to help policy makers find solutions that make government more efficient, accessible, and responsive to the needs of real human beings.

Shortly after Josh Shapiro took office, he made it a priority to reverse Pennsylvania’s reputation for red tape when it came to onerous administrative processes. One of the reasons why? Pennsylvanians complained that it took too long to receive the permits, licenses or certificates they needed. Our fellow, Donald Moynihan, lays out the roadmap that Pennsylvania took to make dramatic improvements in how businesses and individuals interact with the government: https://lnkd.in/dkecm-mh

NEW: Responsive Gov released our latest Election Policy Progress Reports, evaluating a historic year of state voting reforms in 2024. This year, Michigan, Minnesota, and Colorado received A+ grades, while North Carolina earned the only F grade of all 50 states. From our executive director, Sam Oliker-Friedland: “2024 was a powerful reminder that year after year, state lawmakers have opportunities big and small to advance common sense reforms that make our elections more professional, accessible, and secure.” Read our expert 50-state analysis and view our interactive map here: https://lnkd.in/eJeSFaqf

Administrative burdens can significantly worsen people’s experience with government and limit access to critical resources. In a new white paper from Responsive Gov fellow Donald Moynihan and University of Copenhagen's Morten Hybschmann, they take a look at how a real, substantive framework for improving customer experience with federal government has emerged. You can read the full white paper, “Reducing Administrative Burdens: The U.S. Federal Government Framework,” here: https://lnkd.in/euTvUhHP Read Moynihan's blog post on the research here: https://lnkd.in/ePVtRk24

When it comes to delivering timely and accurate election results, beyond adjusting pre-processing policies, adequately funding election offices can make all the difference. Executive Director Sam Oliker-Friedland spoke with NPR: "One of the best ways to actually intervene on something like this is not necessarily passing a new bill. It's giving more resources to the local election officials across the country that are in charge of counting ballots because those three things — people, space and equipment — all costs money that in many cases election officials don't have." https://lnkd.in/eGNWjREb

Just weeks away from the 2024 election, we unfortunately are witnessing ongoing, politically-motivated efforts by election deniers to disrupt and sow distrust in our elections. Here are a few important stories on these developments: -Indicted lawyer Christina Bobb has a leadership role in the RNC’s election integrity unit. “Election deniers executed a deeply flawed strategy in 2020…What hiring Christina Bobb means is they’re trying to execute the same strategy they did in 2020, without any tweaks.” - Sam Oliker-Friedland, Executive Director of Responsive Gov https://lnkd.in/epRz4PZH?? -Election deniers are running a politicized effort to recruit disruptive poll workers in at least six swing states with the potential to erode trust in our democracy. https://lnkd.in/ewxDRWYt?? -In North Carolina, the efforts of election deniers could lead to disenfranchising upwards of 200,000 eligible voters over clerical errors. https://lnkd.in/eqY5xKrg Our team at Responsive Gov is continuing to monitor these issues around the country, and we’re committed to making sure election administrators have the resources they need to run smooth, transparent, and accurate elections this year.
