Empowering rural Oregon since 1994 #serverural

关于我们

The mission of the Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) AmeriCorps Program is to increase the capacity of rural communities to improve their economic, social, and environmental conditions, through the assistance of trained graduate-level members who live and work in communities for 11 months. Members assist communities and agencies in the development and implementation of plans for achieving a sustainable natural resource base and improving rural economic conditions while gaining community building and leadership skills. The RARE AmeriCorps Program has been empowering rural Oregon leaders since 1994 and has placed more than 500 members in every county in the state. RARE is an AmeriCorps program administered through the University of Oregon’s Institute for Policy Research and Engagement, charged with linking the skills, expertise, and innovation of higher education with the economic development and environmental needs of communities and regions in the State of Oregon. Through the service-learning programs provided by IPRE, RARE AmeriCorps members gain important service and professional experience by helping to solve community and regional development issues.

Every promising posting seemed to require a Master’s degree—which I don’t have—or led to a dead end. I was beginning to feel like the entire job search process was a scam." I’m writing with a tangle of emotions - gratitude, sadness, and excitement to share that my final day as a staff member for the Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) AmeriCorps Program was January 31st. Serving rural communities and supporting members committed to making a difference over the last 4 years has been a beyond rewarding experience – it’s been a wild ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way.? ? As my part-time transition support came to a close, I found myself reflecting on the many opportunities this program has given me – both as a fresh out of undergrad RARE member back in 2017 with the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, and as a young professional in a staff capacity. One of my greatest joy’s has been exploring rural Oregon, visiting the amazing communities and organizations during site visits, and the connections I've made with so many wonderful people along the way. I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve been able to build and will forever be inspired by the movers and shakers in rural spaces. Special shout out to folks who played some critical support to me during my journey - Titus Tomlinson, Victoria Binning, Alexa Carey, Dave Lacey, and Willow Ryon. I’m not sure what my future holds, but I know it won’t be goodbye to Oregon forever. The state and the wonderful humans in it have captured a piece of my soul. In the meantime I’m taking some time to reset, explore new opportunities in Colorado, and will be exploring this new state I’m calling home. If you happen to have connections or know of some great organizations in the Colorado area to check out, please share! #serverural #rareprogram

"Of all the systems that need to change, transportation offers one of the quickest wins." This quote from Grace Andrews explains why she’s EMPOWER's Project Manager, and an EV charging coach for organizations across the Pacific Northwest. Grace is a long-time environmentalist and student of nature, growing up in a small town in Maine. She spent much of her youth outdoors and witnessed climate change happening before her eyes, with increasingly warmer winters and hotter summers.? So she decided to be part of the solution. After graduating from college with a degree in Environmental Science, she served in an AmeriCorps program for two years, doing energy planning work in rural Oregon. She knew clean energy would be at the heart of her work going forward, and moved to the City of Portland to be part of the massive fleet electrification effort at Columbia-Willamette Clean Cities & Communities Coalition, the nonprofit leading EMPOWER. There’s a lot Grace loves about The EMPOWER Project, but two things in particular stand out: 1?? It’s the first and only equity-focused nationwide project of its kind. To date, 60% of EMPOWER’s participating workplaces are in disadvantaged communities. 2?? It’s the biggest collaboration of Clean Cities & Communities since their inception in 1993, with 30+ organizations joining forces to accelerate the adoption of workplace charging.? Thank you, Grace, for bringing everyone together and moving this project so smoothly down the tracks. You bring incredible organization and energy into everything you do, and we’re lucky to have your leadership!
