An estimated 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy. 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime, many of which are epileptic in nature. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases globally and it disproportionately affects low- and middle-income communities. But it's also treatable, especially when both anti-seizure medication and non-drug treatments like anti-seizure devices that go inside the body are accessible. Because an estimated 1 in 3 people living with epilepsy has drug-resistant epilepsy, categorized by seizures that do not respond to anti-seizure medications. The good news is non-drug treatments exist, treatments like NeuroPace and PRECISIS GmbH offer. The World Health Organization estimates up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could live seizure-free if properly diagnosed and treated. Did you know that 21% of adults in the United States live with chronic pain (defined as pain that persists for three months)? That's almost 52 million people. Almost 7% of them, or 17.1 million people, experience such severe pain that they can't do daily activities like walk, work, or take a shower without help, or at all. And roughly every 11 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies from an opioid overdose. In fact, it's estimated that nearly 75% of drug overdose deaths in 2020 involved an opioid. There's a clear need for better treatment for chronic pain. And that's why spinal cord stimulators were created, using decades of bioelectronics research to treat chronic pain without medication. Bioelectronic devices are placed inside the body and use electrical impulses to treat or prevent chronic diseases by stimulating the nervous system. Now, 30,000-60,000 spinal cord stimulators are implanted every year. There are still millions of people who live with pain that's so bad that they cannot do even the most simple tasks. That's millions of people who aren't able to work, to drive, to care for themselves, or to do countless other things. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. But did you know that it disproportionately affects women? The CDC estimates more than 60 million women (44%) in the United States are living with heart disease. Women under 65 are twice as likely to die from a heart attack as men of the same age. And about 1 in 5 women will die from heart disease this year. Heart disease affects people of all ages. It especially affects women, who until the mid-1980s were not included in research on heart disease. Besides biological reasons, researchers have noted multiple factors for the alarming number of women who die from heart disease, especially compared to men. Research shows women are less likely to be treated for cardiovascular problems when compared to men, including being prescribed statins and receiving lifesaving treatments like heart transplants less often. And medical device design has largely centered around what works for men's bodies. A future with better health for all includes everything from better understanding the factors that contribute to heart disease, including socioeconomic factors like less access to fresh food and healthcare services, to better designing treatments for a diverse population. We're proud to be playing a small role in this shift, by helping to miniaturize medical devices so they work with different body types, and by enabling individuals to manage their own health through wireless medical devices that can take the place of regular doctor's visits to deliver treatments.
