We often don’t use the word ‘brave’ at work. However, during a team effectiveness session last week, that was exactly the word that came to mind. Vulnerability requires bravery—the bravery to open ourselves up and trust our team. Hearing team members say, “I struggle with that,” or “You’re so good at that; can you help me?” or “I’m surprised you say that takes energy because when you helped me, it seemed so natural for you,” exemplifies this. As Organizational Psychologist Adam Grant stated, “Revealing struggles shows humility and humanity, opening the door to new sources of support and strength.” Strong teams not only have members who recognize and utilize their own strengths, but also those who leverage the strengths of others.
