The rich, warm material palette of this Brooklyn Heights residential lobby renovation pairs walnut slatting with hot-rolled black steel, charcoal porcelain tile, natural cedar ceiling cladding, and exposed red brick. A complete gut renovation of the main entry and lobby of an early 1900s residential co-op provided a more open layout, better lighting, and a welcoming place to congregate. The co-op board’s desire to preserve - and architecturally highlight – the existing brick walls inspired the material palette. An expanse of exposed brick traversing the length of the lobby provided the perfect opportunity to actualize the client’s hope of creating a gallery for resident artists and children. Long runs of cove lighting highlight the various materials and textures throughout. Fun sneaky storage detail at this NYC loft renovation. https://lnkd.in/ejrc6dct The hallway to the primary bedroom and bathroom is wrapped in natural walnut, with a small guest bedroom on the opposite side. The guest bedroom includes a built-in daybed platform. But to the hall side two rows of custom drawers are built in below the bed platform, allowing for additional storage - perfect for extra linen storage opposite the primary bathroom. Upon entry on the North side, an attached carport incorporates shed storage. On the interior, the material palette is simple, clean, and cozy. White walls are balanced with knotty cedar ceilings. Neutral soft gray tile provides a rough and ready surface for snowy boots. While natural walnut cabinetry adds a rich warmth. On the exterior, the Shou Sugi Ban - inspired siding is a dark-stained cedar on the walls and ceilings, accented with black windows, which feels in keeping with the wooded site in this country retreat. More on our design strategy for our MODERN MODULAR Cutchogue Bluff House. https://lnkd.in/eEtyuewK Nestled into the dunes, the massing responds to the existing topography by pushing and pulling to create exterior spaces where the owners can enjoy the outdoors while finding shelter from the elements. The exterior materials - sandstone, ipe wood decking, and fiber cement panels - were chosen for their durability, and to counter the ‘modern white box’ aesthetic of their current home. The volumes of the home are pushed and pulled in plan, with a central axis maintained allowing for clear circulation through the main level. Pushing and pulling also occurs in elevation, by adjusting the height of the roof’s parapet walls, to enhance the reading of a series of volumes slipping in the landscape. Modules are being fabricated by?Signature Building Systems of PA?now.?Cruz Brothers Construction?is getting the foundation in place. Our recent MODERN MODULAR cabin in the Catskills. https://buff.ly/46KN1ct We visited last week for a punchlist walkthrough as construction winds down. The prefab home is comprised of four 24-foot-long mods on a walkout basement, capitalizing on the sloping site. The carport, with natural cedar ceilings, provides a framed view of the wooded, rocky landscape upon arrival. Projecting out over the sloping landscape, the glass-wrapped living rooms provides a great view of a nearby peak, particularly in the winter months. Stay tuned for more.
