Join a diverse panel of Sam Gilliam experts and scholars at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, December 2nd, to examine the pioneering artist’s legacy and influence on contemporary art. This unique celebration of Sam Gilliam dives into works developed in the mid-1960s that disrupted established artistic norms and styles. Relentlessly experimental and inspired by jazz's improvisatory ethos, Gilliam's lyrical abstractions took on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials during this time. This program includes a pre-launch of "Sam Gilliam," the first book to comprehensively survey his extraordinary five-decade career, created in collaboration with the Sam Gilliam Foundation. I have some exciting news to share! I've just published the first-ever guide to leadership transition in the arts. We know that most airline mishaps happen during takeoff and landing—the same goes for nonprofit leadership transitions. My book, written for CEOs and trustees, is packed with personal insights, lessons learned, and proven strategies for those critical moments when our beloved cultural or nonprofit institutions are entrusted to new leaders. Think of it as a flight manual for a smooth transition.

“It’s somewhat unusual these days to encounter shows of contemporary art that are simply ravishing—that have no political agenda, no “forgotten” artists to unearth, no revisionist histories to put forth. But such is the case with “Larry Bell: Improvisations” at the Phoenix Art Museum curated by the museum’s Rachel Sadvary Zebro.” —Ann Landi Read the full review of “Larry Bell: Improvisations” in The Wall Street Journal:

Counting down the days until “Lucy Bull: The Garden of Forking Paths” debuts at #ICAMiami during #MiamiArtWeek! Bull’s (b.1990, New York) paintings elevate viewers’ awareness of perception—with optical overload and disruptive dissonance, the works shift observation into a heightened, hypersensitive state.? “I use color almost like visual bait. I hope that the paintings suspend a viewer’s attention so that … there’s the possibility of the painting morphing, and transforming, and creating a visceral response for the viewer. I’m always interested in creating a situation where your eye can travel and get lost in the works.” — Lucy Bull The exhibition features sixteen paintings produced over the last five years, often larger, horizontal, and more immersive in scale. In parallel to the exhibition, Bull’s ICA Miami stairwell commission will be on view through September 2025. “The Garden of Forking Paths” is the first U.S. museum exhibition of the Los Angeles–based painter, organized by ICA Miami and curated by Gean Moreno, Director of ICA Miami’s Knight Foundation Art + Research Center.
