This (lower left) is a Nokia 3310. It is considered by many to be the most durable phone ever made. This is not an accident. This phone was also highly regarded for battery life and, believe it or not, at the time was considered extremely well designed. At ResilienX, we admire things that are designed well, given that we have a history of designing the system that enabled the US Army to operate BVLOS in the National Airspace back in 2015. We also know that designs, even the best of them, fail in operations. This is why we have developed a complement to great designed UAS ecosystems, which is an In-Time Aviation Safety Management System called FRAIHMWORK. Design-time assurance is important, but insufficient. #IASMS is a set of functionality, being monitor, assess, and mitigate. Suppose our friend the 3310 is being used to make a pizza order, but for some reason, the area where the phone call is being made has a network outage. The most robust phone now is nothing more than a paperweight. To get your pizza ordered, you better figure out whether there is a network issue, or for some reason that phone is no good and you need to have your friend order your large half pepperoni half olive and banana pepper. This process of figuring out there’s a problem (monitoring), figuring out the impact of the problem (assessment), and figuring out a plan to get pizza (mitigation) so you and your friends don’t have a hangry meltdown, is what IASMS does for scaled #BVLOS. Given that with scaled BVLOS, there are many, many more things integrated together, the problems that can arise at scale aren’t a cute example. They demand an IASMS. Attention #UAS designers, integrators, service providers, and regulators. ResilienX is leading a new ASTM task group to publish a Standard Guide for In-Time Aviation Safety Management System (#IASMS) functionality. We feel this has been a long time coming, as we've experienced that most of the problems that happen with complex ecosystems are cross-cutting at the integration level. The standard guide is going to fill a gap, by highlighting approaches for mitigating many integration-level failure modes, during operations. I can't believe ResilienX is already 6 years old. If LinkedIn didn't remind me every year, I would completely blow by the anniversary without pausing to appreciate how far we have come and how many great people we have worked with along the way. The rubber really hit the road this year as we transition from primarily R&D to supporting operations (not just test events, POC, simulations, etc.). That transition has been both terrifying and exciting. It wouldn't have been possible without our world-class team and amazing industry partners. I'm personally grateful for all of you (not tagging 1000 people here, but you know who you are)! 2025 is going to be exciting. I can't wait to reflect again this time next year on where ResilienX and the drone industry at large have grown to. Onward and upward!
