Accelerating resiliency planning with Virginia communities
关于我们
Resilient Virginia is a non-profit organization with the mission of bringing resiliency resources to communities and businesses around the state to accelerate resiliency planning. Our Approach - Bring a statewide approach to the forefront to highlight the diverse risks being addressed by communities across the Commonwealth; - Work across institutional and political silos to educate multiple community elements; - Build collaborative relationships so that communities are more inclusive, cohesive, and productive when addressing their challenges; and - Activate communities to strengthen physical and societal infrastructure so they continue to function as centers of production, sources of essential services, and equitable communities despite challenges. Our Goals - To inform diverse community representatives around the Commonwealth about natural, climate-related, and man-made challenges; - To educate key groups about models for community resiliency planning; and - To activate these communities to engage in resiliency plan development. What We Provide: - A hub for information on resiliency planning, climate change, preparedness, environmental challenges, energy security, economic stressors, health and social equity, and national security threats; - Workshops and training for local governments and community organizations on planning “how-to’s” and high priority issues that impact resiliency strategies; and - Statewide conferences that report on progress, define new challenges, and propel implementation of practical and policy solutions.

The Virginia Energy Resilience Study (VERS) is working with historically marginalized and under-served communities across the state to measure their energy resilience and identify practical long-term solutions to reduce or eliminate vulnerabilities. We are co-hosting a virtual informational session about the program on October 22nd, noon-1pm ET. Right now, southern states are being devastated by multiple high-intensity #hurricanes, resulting in another compounding disaster. These disasters leave no time or ability to recover and introduce new and complex risk scenarios for communities, decision-makers, and disaster managers. A recently released National Academies consensus study looked at the challenges experienced by Gulf communities following the multiple #disasters that hit the region in 2020 and 2021. One conclusion of the study that there is critical need to strengthen built infrastructure, especially #housing, since safe, secure shelter is critical for withstanding compounding disasters. That’s why the Academies is having this timely discussion on the impacts of these disasters on peoples’ homes and what decision makers can do to build stronger, more resilient communities. In this #ClimateConversation, our panelists will do a deep dive into housing resiliency, and how we can and must rethink our disaster framework to adapt to this new reality. The Fall Resiliency Academy continues with a look at FEMA's regulations requiring the integration of climate in Hazard Mitigation Plans and how this can benefit localities. In Session 1 we heard about various ways the changing climate is impacting our communities. Knowing what climate changes they are likely to experience and integrating them into their planning efforts can help localities properly plan for the future. But that's not the only benefit of integrating climate into planning efforts. It also opens up funding opportunities that can help communities implement actions to achieve their resilience goals. Join us for Session 2 to learn more about integrating climate in your planning efforts and the benefits it will bring. Register ? https://lnkd.in/edrqa23u
