This process helps companies make informed investment decisions, rank exploration opportunities, and manage exploration risks. Accurate resource estimation relies on geological, geophysical, and petrophysical data integration. Key Elements of Resource Estimation Prospect resource estimation involves calculating three primary components: 1. Trap and Reservoir Characteristics – Understanding the structure, seal, and reservoir properties. 2. Hydrocarbon Charge and Migration – Estimating the volume of hydrocarbons that reached the trap. 3. Retention and Recovery Potential – Evaluating seal integrity and production feasibility. Methods of Resource Estimation 1. Probabilistic Approach This method accounts for uncertainty by using probability distributions for key parameters. Monte Carlo simulation is commonly used to generate a range of possible resource estimates (P90, P50, P10 values). P90 (Proven) – 90% probability of at least this amount being present. P50 (Most Likely) – 50% probability of this amount. P10 (High Case) – 10% probability of at least this volume. 2. Analogs-Based Approach Uses data from geologically similar fields to estimate resources when direct data is limited. This is useful for frontier exploration areas. Risk and Uncertainty in Resource Estimation Prospect resources are classified based on the Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS) into: Prospective Resources – Yet to be discovered but geologically possible. Contingent Resources – Discovered but not yet commercially viable. Reserves – Commercially recoverable with existing technology. Hydrodynamic Seals – Resulting from variations in pressure gradients that prevent fluid movement, even without a physical barrier. Seal Capacity, Integrity, and Effectiveness 1. Seal Capacity Seal capacity refers to the ability of a rock to retain hydrocarbons before leaking. It depends on factors like: Capillary Entry Pressure – The pressure required for hydrocarbons to displace water in the seal. Column Height – The maximum thickness of hydrocarbons the seal can support. 2. Seal Integrity Seal integrity assesses whether a seal remains intact under geological stress conditions. Factors influencing integrity include: Diagenesis – Changes in rock properties due to burial and fluid interactions. Mechanical Failure – Fault reactivation or fracturing due to tectonic forces. 3. Seal Effectiveness A seal’s effectiveness depends on its lateral continuity, thickness, and permeability. Even a good lithological seal can fail if it is laterally discontinuous or affected by secondary porosity. Methods of Seal Analysis Seal analysis involves a combination of geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods: 1. Core and Outcrop Studies – Direct observation of rock properties. 2. Wireline Logs – Gamma-ray, density, and sonic logs help identify seal lithologies. 3. Seismic Interpretation – 3D seismic data reveal fault and fold configurations affecting seals. 4. Mercury Injection Capillary Pressure (MICP) – Measures seal rock’s ability to trap hydrocarbons. 5. Geomechanical Modeling – Evaluates the stress history and potential seal failure.
