At this year's annual meeting, we presented the Rear Adm. Bennett "Bud" Sparks Award in two categories. The recipient of The Rear Adm. Bennett “Bud” Sparks Award in Category 1 is U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. Accepting the award on their behalf is Lt. Cmdr. Jacqueline M. Bethel. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu is recognized for outstanding performance demonstrated by their seamless integration of Reservists into the Active-Duty workforce, providing mission-ready support as a critical force multiplier. In May 2023, Typhoon MAWAR struck Guam with devastating force. The storm caused island-wide power and water outages, affecting over 170,000 residents. Sector Honolulu swiftly deployed Reservists to coordinate response efforts with Sector Guam’s geographically isolated area of responsibility. Within 72 hours, the Port of Guam and the surrounding Marianas were reopened. Despite the challenges of 92% of the population without power and 65% without water, additional Reservists facilitated logistical operations, including the safe removal of hazardous waste. In August 2023, 24 Reservists (39% of Sector’s Reserve force) joined a multi agency effort to respond to wildfires that ravaged 7,000 acres of Maui, Hawaii, causing $6 billion in damages and resulting in the complete loss of 2,200 structures, including the historic town and harbor of Lahaina. Sector Honolulu Reservists were integral in saving 17 lives, assisting 40 people in peril, enforcing a dynamic six nautical miles of safety zone, extracting more than 90 impacted vessels obstructing the harbor, and removing over 10,000 gallons of petroleum products and 24,000 pounds of hazardous materials from the sensitive marine environment. #ROAAM24 #OctoberRecap #ICYMI

The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) marks its 30th anniversary this month. However, the protection of service members' civilian careers dates back 84 years to the 1940 Veterans' Reemployment Rights Act. Why USERRA Matters Today: - Essential for military recruitment and retention - Protects civilian career rights of Guard and Reserve members - Updates 1940s protections for modern workforce - Remains critical for national defense readiness Read Capt. Samuel F. Wright's comprehensive primer in Law Review 24047 for full details on your rights and protections under USERRA: https://lnkd.in/ehP-Fg7T. #USERRA30 #VeteransRights #MilitaryService #ReserveForces #NationalDefense #EmploymentLaw
