Reserva: The Youth Land Trust, Inc. is a youth-led organization that works to bridge the gap between youth environmental activism and traditional biodiversity conservation. Founded by Callie Broaddus and a team of international youth-led by Bella Lack in 2019, Reserva embarked on a flagship project to create the world's first entirely youth-funded nature reserve—a breathtaking patch of cloud forest in the Ecuadorian Chocó. Reserva is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to empower young people to make a measurable difference for threatened species and habitats through conservation, education, and storytelling. Youth Can Save Corals: Join us for an inspiring, youth-led event dedicated to saving our precious coral reefs! In this engaging session, young changemakers will explore five ways young people can be part of the solution to our coral crisis. From raising funds to support groundbreaking scientific research to influencing global policy, kids and youth around the world are already showing that they have the initiative and know-how to make a difference. Through quick-fire presentations, we will discuss how youth can take action right now through: grassroots fundraising, bold advocacy, rights-based legal frameworks, global policy, and, of course, hands-on action. This article explains the importance and necessity of data collection integrating local and indigenous knowledge to protect nature. In 2008 Ecuador became the first country to integrate the Rights of Nature in its constitution. The Cedros legal case set a precedent that guides current cases fighting mining activities in which no previous consultation has been made to allow their execution, and which threaten local communities' health and ecosystems' biodiversity. I was lucky to work for Ecoforensic, Reserva Tesoro Escondido, and learn from people's perspectives and experiences who participated in the first workshop.?? ? I invite you to read this article to understand some of the impacts of mining activities on humans and nature, the importance of incorporating local knowledge in data collection, and why the Cedros legal case is an international reference.
