Youth Can Save Corals: Join us for an inspiring, youth-led event dedicated to saving our precious coral reefs! In this engaging session, young changemakers will explore five ways young people can be part of the solution to our coral crisis. From raising funds to support groundbreaking scientific research to influencing global policy, kids and youth around the world are already showing that they have the initiative and know-how to make a difference. Through quick-fire presentations, we will discuss how youth can take action right now through: grassroots fundraising, bold advocacy, rights-based legal frameworks, global policy, and, of course, hands-on action. This event is for all, whether you are a young person looking for ways to make a difference or a seasoned expert looking for real ways to engage the next generation in your work. Youth Empowerment | Conservation | Storytelling — Working to create the first entirely youth-funded nature reserve.
关于我们
Reserva: The Youth Land Trust, Inc. is a youth-led organization that works to bridge the gap between youth environmental activism and traditional biodiversity conservation. Founded by Callie Broaddus and a team of international youth-led by Bella Lack in 2019, Reserva embarked on a flagship project to create the world's first entirely youth-funded nature reserve—a breathtaking patch of cloud forest in the Ecuadorian Chocó. Reserva is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to empower young people to make a measurable difference for threatened species and habitats through conservation, education, and storytelling. Find out how you can be part of our work at our website or by emailing [email protected].

This article explains the importance and necessity of data collection integrating local and indigenous knowledge to protect nature. In 2008 Ecuador became the first country to integrate the Rights of Nature in its constitution. The Cedros legal case set a precedent that guides current cases fighting mining activities in which no previous consultation has been made to allow their execution, and which threaten local communities' health and ecosystems' biodiversity. I was lucky to work for Ecoforensic, Reserva Tesoro Escondido, and learn from people's perspectives and experiences who participated in the first workshop.?? ? I invite you to read this article to understand some of the impacts of mining activities on humans and nature, the importance of incorporating local knowledge in data collection, and why the Cedros legal case is an international reference. Great article by Mika Peck, Mateo Desselas, Santiago Bonilla-Bedoya, G. Redín and Juan Durango-Cordero.

?? Last call for donations to support families impacted by the landslide in San Marcos! After sending our first grant of $2,137 last week, we've raised a further $297 to help our Indigenous neighbors rebuild. If you've been meaning to give, please chip in by Feb 5 to have your gift included in our next support grant! When people living near protected areas need help meeting their basic needs, we believe humanitarian aid is a form of conservation action. "Every individual makes a difference, every day, and we can choose what sort of difference we make." — Jane Goodall Thank you all for your generous support of Dracula Reserve's neighbors after their tragic losses in this month's landslide. Today, we sent a grant of $2,137 to Fundación EcoMinga, our partners who are on the ground supplying aid right now to the San Marcos community. Your action this week has provided funding to rebuild an entire home and chip in for more essential aid on top of that. We'll keep the link open permanently at https://lnkd.in/eE9gzg9m, and it will stay in our bio for a few more weeks for anyone else who is willing to chip in. Thank you for sending such a great global hug to our friends and neighbors in a time of need! ?????? ?? Callie Broaddus - Mushrooms at Dracula Reserve

?? Meet Pattonimus ecomingae, a rare species of medium-sized rat that was described as part of a new genus in 2020. It is ONLY known from Dracula Reserve and is thought to be Critically Endangered (not yet evaluated). Research on our expedition in October showed that the largest known population of this species appears to be in the 1,050-acre expansion project funded by our youth community and Orchid Conservation Alliance! That's great news for a new genus and species we're only just getting to know. ?? Callie Broaddus - Photo taken in the field for scientific research with Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad - INABIO To take this photo, the researcher tied a thick string around the rat's back leg, which allowed us to take a few live images of the individual before collection. We worked very quickly to minimize stress and offered it bits of cracker as a distraction, which helped it relax. While we prefer to share pictures taken without manipulation of the animal, there are no known in-situ photos of this species (for now!). We believe it's important to share transparent caption information for wildlife images not taken in situ. Please do not handle wildlife outside of permitted research. #mastozoologia #conservationscience #mammals

While mist netting at the recent expansion of Dracula Reserve, we documented an unusually high number of Purplish-mantled Tanagers! I had only ever seen one in my life, so having these beauties be almost common for the week was really exciting. The great news is that means you all have helped protect a huge swath of habitat for this rare species, which is evaluated as Near Threatened on the #IUCNRedList! ?? ??
