CALL FOR PAPERS - "Refugee Law and Forced Migration Studies: Debates, Interactions and Futures’’, 15th Anniversary Conference 2 - 4 June 2025 DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS: MONDAY 27 JANUARY 2025 The RLI Conference offers a dedicated annual forum internationally to share and debate the latest research?and cutting-edge developments in refugee protection. This year’s dedicated conference theme – ‘Refugee Law and Forced Migration Studies’ – revisits these fields, their debates and the connections between them. The RLI was created in 2010 to promote research and collaboration on international refugee law. Since then, the refugee law field has expanded exponentially. But this field sits alongside, or within, a well-established field of forced migration studies with its own momentum and dynamics. Despite historical tensions between these fields, researchers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines have regularly sought innovative ways to develop and bridge them. The conference seeks to reignite this debate, highlighting new and important directions in these fields, unpacking opportunities for mutual learning and reflecting on the remaining tensions. Forthcoming Hybrid Event 'Launch: Litigating the right to a nationality – a guide for practitioners', 4 December 2024, 18:00 - 21:30 GMT, Online via Zoom & The Senate Room, 1st Floor, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU This hybrid event will launch a new guide for practitioners on litigating the right to a nationality. Jointly published by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and the Open Society Foundations, the guide has been written by Dr Bronwen Manby, a lecturer on our interdisciplinary masters degree in human rights at the Human Rights Consortium within the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study. @ RESEARCHING INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT, we've just published a topical new Working Paper by Abigayil Parr: "A Place to Call Home: Securing Durable Solutions for Internally Displaced People in South Sudan and Somalia" - https://lnkd.in/eNHBT3CH This paper seeks to explore the different approaches to securing durable solutions for IDPs used by national authorities and international actors in two countries with large populations of displaced people: South Sudan and Somalia. It finds that the approaches to resolving displacement of both national and international actors demonstrate relatively close adherence with international frameworks. Furthermore, in line with international initiatives, interventions in South Sudan and Somalia aiming to secure solutions for IDPs have undergone a broad shift towards development-oriented, ‘whole of society’ approaches which attempt to address aspects of displacement across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus.
