The Research Park at SDSU utilizes its space to create a crossroads for business, education, and research. We assist entrepreneurs and start-up businesses by providing supportive services and establishing business-to-business connections. We also bring together stakeholders from businesses and higher education to encourage innovation in science and technology and to solve problems of industry. The resources and space we offer attract big businesses and encourage economic growth. Spanning 125 acres, we have three main buildings from which our services run: the Business Innovation Center (BIC), the Seed Technology Laboratory, and the new POET Bioproducts Center. The BIC is a multi-tenant building that serves as the park’s headquarters. It acts as an incubator for start-up companies and entrepreneurs while simultaneously providing spaces and services for well-established companies who serve as mentors and business partners to the start-up companies. A total of 43,000 square-feet, the BIC offers office space, conference rooms, internet, break rooms, and collaborative opportunities. The Seed Technology Laboratory on the other hand houses ample laboratory space used to foster collaborative innovation and research. Used by a variety of people, the laboratory functions as a center for discovery, teaching, outreach, and technical services. Multiple tenants are currently using it to complete seed and crop research, including South Dakota State University (SDSU).     Last Friday, the Research Park had the privilege of hosting an NSF I-CORPS Pitch Event in partnership with South Dakota State University At this event, seven faculty members presented their work, outlining a problem they aim to address, their proposed solution, a product to support it, and the intellectual property status. Following the presentations, faculty returned to the stage for a Q&A session, engaging a diverse audience of 50 attendees—including investors, students, faculty, and influential community members with a keen interest in research.     Last Tuesday, Research Park staff Matilyn (Matty) Kerr and Cierra Steffensen attended the 2024 Innovation Expo in Sioux Falls! ?? ?     SDSU Sets New Research Milestone! For the second year in a row, South Dakota State University has set a new record for research expenditures, reaching an impressive $84 million in FY 2024 — a 13.5% increase from last year’s $74 million! This achievement highlights the dedication of SDSU faculty, staff, and students to cutting-edge innovation and research that benefits the public. Private sector partnerships with SDSU hold a massive impact on research growth like this, and the Research Park is an important part of building those relationships. Notable projects from the past year include the restoration of native plants in the Northern Great Plains, research into the role of lean pork in a plant-based diet, efforts to develop resilient electrical grids for rural communities, and work to improve palliative care access across the state. These projects, among many others, are examples of how SDSU research is making an impact across disciplines. As SDSU continues its pursuit of R1 classification, this milestone is a testament to its expanding impact and commitment to excellence.
